Description
Witch Regret is a machine, one of the Four Shining Stars serving the interstellar warship Edens Zero. Created by the Demon King Ziggy on Planet Granbell, she functions as the Shield of Edens, dedicated to defending the ship and its crew. Following Ziggy's discovery of an infant Shiki during their voyage seeking Mother, he disbanded the crew; Witch remained aboard, disguising the Edens Zero and entering sleep mode until Shiki's return as the next Demon King. Though her memories of living on Granbell with Ziggy were later revealed to be false programming for functionality, she retains authentic memories from the two-week return voyage after finding Shiki. Ziggy modeled her and the other Shining Stars after four of eight human bodies found with Shiki, patterning Witch specifically after Shiki's biological mother.
She possesses a tall, curvy figure, green eyes, and long braided green hair. Witch typically wears a visor marked "E4" over her eyes, expressing embarrassment when showing her face without it—a face Rebecca and Homura described as beautiful. Her initial outfit is a black, half-cut long-sleeved dress featuring yellow stripes, a deep back cut, grey sleeves, and a heart-shaped chest cut exposing cleavage. Outfit variations include a witch's hat and skirt worn during the Mildian trip, a strapless leotard with purple markings and a horned helmet after Sun Jewel, and a longer dress version post-Belial Gore. Deleted memories depict her wearing glasses and formal women's wear.
Her personality blends calm dutifulness with profound loyalty to Ziggy and Shiki, whom she serves with unwavering obedience. Witch exhibits a full emotional range, from tearful joy proclaiming Shiki the new Demon King, to panic during crises like the Chronophage's approach to Guilst, and grief learning of Valkyrie's death. She functions as the crew's mother figure, offering comfort, protection, and wisdom, prioritizing their safety above all and stating her purpose is eliminating threats to her "family." This protective instinct manifests as tranquil fury towards enemies, seen when she brutally attacks those threatening the ship. Despite her nurturing nature, she displays submissiveness and occasional obliviousness, complying with orders regardless of their nature.
Witch reemerges from stasis after Shiki acquires the Edens Zero, activating Protocol A7 when he sits on the Demon King's throne. She demonstrates her capabilities by purging infestations and restoring the ship's original form. Her role expands to guiding the crew's search for the remaining Shining Stars, explaining their functions: Sister as the "Life of Edens" for healing, Valkyrie as the "Sword of Edens," and Hermit as the "Mind of Edens." She mentors Rebecca, training her in Ether Gear control and dubbing her "Chrono Witch," subtly positioning her as a potential successor. Witch's combat abilities include deploying a Protection Matrix shield and utilizing a Battle Dress for enhanced combat.
Her most defining moment occurs during the Nero 66 arc. With Ziggy seizing control of the Edens Zero and the planet minutes from destruction, Witch dons her Battle Dress and activates a planet-scale Protection Matrix to shield the ship from the explosion. Defying Shiki's orders to survive, she sacrifices herself while affirming her pride in being the crew's shield, vanishing in a blinding flash and leaving the crew to mourn.
In Universe Zero, the multiverse convergence point, Witch exists without regaining memories of previous timelines due to her death prior to the crew's arrival. Her absence necessitates Rebecca eventually assuming the role of the new Shield of Edens, fulfilling the earlier foreshadowing of her succession.
