Description
Shinichi Chiba captains and plays center for Shinmaruko High School's basketball team. Towering at approximately 200 cm with a muscular build, he's nicknamed "Gorilla" by his peers. He sports medium-length black spiky hair and dons jersey number 4 with "Air Force 1 Mid" sneakers during games.
Born in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, he started playing basketball young. Despite significant skill in middle school, his height of 165 cm prevented official game participation, solidifying his belief that basketball requires tall athletes. This led him to reject applicants under 170 cm for Shinmaruko High's team. Witnessing Sora Kurumatani's abilities during a practice game against Kuzuryū High shifts his perspective, causing regret for his previous stance.
He played mini-basketball alongside Takahashi, who later joins Shinjo Towa Academy. As team captain, Chiba demonstrates passionate leadership, emphasizing discipline and honest play without dirty tactics. He actively encourages teammates during low morale and prioritizes collective effort over individual glory.
On court, he dominates the paint area, leveraging size and strength for rebounding and shot-blocking. He excels at layups, dunks, and free throws but shows limited outside shooting proficiency. Statistical assessments rate his physical ability and stamina at 10/10, technique at 8/10, mental strength at 9/10, and special ability at 7/10.
His high school career concludes after Shinmaruko High's loss to Yokohama Taiei High in the Kanagawa Representative finals. Following this defeat, he retires and declines an offer from Johoku University, partly because former mini-basketball teammates Takahashi and Kojima plan to enroll there.
Later, he participates in the Monster Bash Tournament with Takahashi and Kojima, forming "The Gorillaz." They lose a close match to Kuzuryū High in the second round. After the game, he acknowledges Chiaki Hanazono's basketball skills and gifts him his "Air Force 1 Mid" sneakers as a sign of respect.
His surname "Chiba" (千葉) translates to "thousand leaves," while "Shinichi" (真一) means "one truth" or "reality," reflecting themes of authenticity in his character journey.
