Description
Hanako, formerly known as Amane Yugi, is the Seventh and most prominent supernatural among Kamome Academy's Seven Mysteries. School rumors place him in the third stall of the girls' bathroom in the old school building, granting wishes for appropriate prices. His appearance is that of a short boy, approximately 150 cm tall, with choppy black hair and distinctive amber crescent-moon-shaped eyes. He wears Kamome Academy's historic male uniform: a black gakuran with gold buttons, white collar, red hems, and red socks, paired with a matching hat bearing a gold emblem. A white seal marked with the kanji "封" adorns his left cheek, signifying partial binding of his powers by a Minamoto clan exorcist. He commands two hakujoudai—spirit orbs with red and green cores—that aid in surveillance, teleportation, and summoning items like his black cape.
In life, Amane Yugi suffered an untreatable childhood circulatory condition. His younger twin, Tsukasa, vanished on their birthday after an undisclosed sacrifice that miraculously cured Amane. Amane later attended Kamome Academy's middle school division, enduring unexplained physical abuse evidenced by frequent bruises and bandages. Despite a passion for astronomy and dreams of becoming an astronaut, he grew reclusive and secretive. His homeroom teacher, Tsuchigomori (the Fifth Wonder), observed Amane's destined future as a science teacher shift unexpectedly; Amane instead killed Tsukasa with a knife and died young under unknown circumstances, becoming the only known human to alter a predetermined fate.
After death, Amane adopted the "Hanako" identity and rose to lead the Seven Mysteries. His duties involve maintaining human-supernatural balance, overseeing rumor enforcement, and eliminating threats to the school. He presents a cheerful, mischievous front, often teasing allies like Nene Yashiro and employing sadistic humor, including threats with his kitchen knife. This demeanor masks profound guilt and emotional isolation. He habitually suppresses negative emotions, smiles during distress, and avoids discussing his human life. His decisions frequently incur significant personal or collateral costs, driven by a belief in their necessity, and he readily deceives others to achieve goals.
Hanako's powers extend beyond his hakujoudai. He wields a kitchen knife in combat and employs supernatural seals to suppress curses or counter tools like Kou Minamoto's Raiteijou staff. As the Seventh Mystery, he creates protective barriers, such as a "七" seal activated by a cheek kiss to shield Nene. His powers weaken in territories controlled by other Wonders without permission or destruction of their yorishiro. Physical and spiritual barriers, like the Minamoto clan's lightning cage, can also neutralize him.
His relationship with Nene Yashiro began when she summoned him for a romantic wish. After she accidentally ingested a mermaid's scale—cursing her to transform into a fish—Hanako consumed another scale to share the curse, binding their souls and reducing her condition to temporary fish-like traits in water. Though calling her his "assistant," he develops deep affection for her, prioritizing her safety over others. He monitors her via hakujoudai, searches for items to cheer her, and strives to prolong her lifespan upon learning she has less than a year to live, contrasting sharply with his apathy towards those he deems less valuable.
Interactions reveal Hanako's complexities. He clashes with exorcist Kou Minamoto, initially tasked with eliminating him, though they form an alliance centered on protecting Nene. His history resurfaces when Tsukasa reappears as a malevolent supernatural manipulating other Wonders, including forcibly transforming Hanako's late classmate Mitsuba into a hostile spirit. Hanako also shares strained ties with Wonders like Yako and Tsuchigomori, who respect his authority but criticize his secretive methods.
Story arcs highlight Hanako's internal conflicts. During the Picture Perfect Arc, he imprisons Nene in a painted world to circumvent her fate, revealing his willingness to defy the natural order for her. In the Three Clock Keepers Arc, timeline alterations show an adult Amane as a teacher—his once-desired path—but this reality corrupts him into a murderous entity. These events reinforce his fixation on atoning for past sins through his duties, believing this promise will grant absolution.
