Description
Osaru no Monkichi, also known as Oyama no Monkichi, is a male anthropomorphic monkey character created by Sanrio in 1992. His name means "Monkichi of the Mountains," indicating his home on a small mountain in the Japanese countryside with his parents. His father is a pun-master, and his mother is a skilled cook.

Monkichi is optimistic, easygoing, and lively, though he sometimes gets carried away. He enjoys challenges and loves puns and bad jokes. Bananas are his favorite food; he can eat ten in one minute. A key ambition is his dream to become a poet.

He appears in the 2010 anime *The Gold Ax and The Silver Ax*. In video games, he tells jokes at the Banana Theatre in *Hello Kitty Online*, and players can clean his car for friendship points in *Hello Kitty: Big City Dreams*. He stars in the fable "Mercury and the Workmen" in episode 6b of *Hello Kitty's Animation Theater*. More recently, a Monkichi-themed amusement ride debuted in *My Hello Kitty Cafe* on Roblox in August 2023, followed by a Monkichi employee NPC, outfits, and a birthday party event in January 2024. He also features in the mobile game *Hello Sweet Days*.

Sanrio released Monkichi during a year of the monkey in the Chinese zodiac; whether this timing was intentional is unclear. His Sanrio character ranking peaked at 4th place in 1993 but had declined to 43rd by 2024. A dedicated fan in San Francisco maintains the "My Monkichi Life" blog, showcasing an extensive collection.

Official descriptions consistently highlight Monkichi's energetic personality, love for bananas, and poetic aspirations across all media appearances.
