Kanae Shinjō is a left-handed second-year student at Kameido High School, active in the tennis club. She possesses bubblegum pink hair extending past her hips, secured with blackish-purple circle clips, and grayish-blue eyes. Kanae consistently defies normal behavior and physical laws, sleeping upright against walls, wielding a tennis racket strung with her grandmother's hair, sinking into solid ground, and splitting into multiple entities. Her surreal antics persistently unsettle Yuri Oshimoto, the club's most conventional member.

Beyond the main cast, Kanae interacts with recurring figures: her grandmother, the source of her racket strings; a migrant acquaintance named Yucatan from the Yucatan Peninsula; her cousin Mika-san, who works at a kindergarten; and Bobby, a former U.S. Navy SEAL managing that kindergarten. Across the series' seasons, OVAs, and spin-offs like *Takamiya Nasuno Desu!* and *Usakame*, Kanae displays no significant evolution, backstory, or exploration of her family history or personal motivations. Her role remains fixed as a source of surreal humor through physics-defying eccentricity, persistently unsettling others without substantive growth or change in her interactions.
