Kanae Shinjō is a 16-year-old second-year high school student and tennis club member. She stands 145 cm tall and weighs 38 kg. Her most striking feature is her bubblegum pink hair, flowing past her hips in a side ponytail and featuring a distinct hair antenna (ahoge). Small blackish-purple circle clips adorn her hair, which varies in length: the back cascades below her stomach while the front pieces reach her shoulders. Her eyes are a grayish-blue hue.

Kanae frequently exhibits unconventional behaviors that defy norms and sometimes violate the laws of physics. These include sleeping while standing upright with her head against a wall, sinking into solid ground, splitting herself into two distinct entities, and wielding a tennis racket uniquely strung with strands of her grandmother's hair. These actions consistently unsettle her tennis club peers, particularly Yuri Oshimoto.

Her family includes the grandmother who supplied the hair for her racket strings and a cousin known as Mika-san, affiliated with a kindergarten. Official records list her name as "Kanawe" (かなゑ), not "Kanae".
