Description
Satoshi, known as Ash Ketchum, is a Pokémon Trainer from Pallet Town in the Kanto region who embarked on a journey to become a Pokémon Master, a quest that extended into the Unova region.
In Unova, his appearance underwent a notable change. He wore a red and white hat featuring a blue Poké Ball design, a blue and white hooded jacket with a golden zipper, black baggy jeans, black fingerless gloves with red borders, and red high-top sneakers. His eye pupils were more visibly defined, and his lightning bolt-like facial markings appeared slightly smaller.
His spirited and determined personality remained intact. He offered helpful advice to friends and Pokémon alike, assisting them in overcoming fears, and demonstrated patience while retaining his core traits and deep affection for Pokémon. Initially challenged by a new region filled with unfamiliar Pokémon and the absence of his former companion Takeshi, he learned greater independence and grew as a Trainer with the support of new friends and Pokémon.
His relationships included several traveling companions and rivals. He met Iris after mistakenly attempting to catch her Axew; though initially annoyed, they journeyed together, with Iris often calling him a "little kid" due to his occasional immaturity. Despite disagreements, their friendship endured and they parted on good terms. Dent joined him after being impressed by his battling skills and bond with Pokémon during a Gym battle, contributing culinary skills and training advice in a largely harmonious partnership.
His rivals included Trip, with whom he shared an instantly contentious dynamic reminiscent of his earlier rivalry with Shigeru. Initially hostile and dismissive, Trip grew less so after a loss to Champion Adeku and eventually showed respect following his defeat by Satoshi in the Unova League. Other rivals included Bel, whose frequent accidental run-ins led to a friendly dynamic; Shooti, a respectful rival who trained alongside him; and Kenyan, who became a friend despite Satoshi frequently misremembering his name. He also developed a rivalry with Cabernet, a fellow Connoisseur who frequently challenged Dent and, by extension, Satoshi’s group.
His Pokémon team in Unova consisted of Pikachu, his first and constant partner, along with several new captures. These included a Pidove that evolved into Tranquill and later Unfezant; an Oshawott that shared a strong bond with him despite occasionally leaving its Poké Ball uninvited; Snivy; Tepig, which evolved into Pignite; Sewaddle, which evolved into Swadloon and then Leavanny; Sandile, which evolved into Krokorok and then Krookodile; Palpitoad; Scraggy; and Boldore.
He competed in the Unova League but was defeated in the quarter-finals by Kenyan. After this loss, he expressed a desire for a rematch with another rival, Shinji, which was accepted. Upon concluding his Unova journey, he left his Unova-caught Pokémon with Professor Oak before continuing his travels.
His design and narrative role in the Unova arc reflected a broader effort to refresh the series with entirely new Pokémon and settings, appealing to both returning and new audiences. This approach emphasized communication features and incorporated narrative themes of polarity, contrasting urban and natural environments.
