Description
Hazuki Katou is a first-year student at Kitauji High School and a member of its concert band, where she plays the tuba. She has short, straight brown hair that curls at the ends, gold-hazel eyes, and wears a red-pinkish hair clip. Her usual attire is the standard first-year female uniform of the school.
Hazuki possesses a cheerful and friendly personality, her bright nature often lifting the spirits of those around her. She is caring and supportive toward her friends, readily offering empathy, encouragement, or help. She is generally athletic, a trait stemming from her past involvement in sports.
Before high school, Hazuki attended Higashi Middle School and was a member of the tennis team, with no prior musical experience. She joined the concert band out of admiration for the trumpet but was ultimately assigned the tuba, an instrument she sometimes affectionately calls "Tubacabura."
Upon entering Kitauji High, Hazuki quickly befriended her classmates Kumiko Oumae and Sapphire Kawashima. Her open and informal nature led her to immediately ask Kumiko to use first names. The three formed a close-knit group, often seen together, and Hazuki's presence helped the initially shy Sapphire become more social and cheerful.
Hazuki developed romantic feelings for Shuuichi Tsukamoto, a childhood friend of Kumiko, after he assisted her with a task. She confessed to him at the Agata Festival, but he rejected her, explaining he saw her only as a friend and had feelings for someone else—understood by Hazuki to be Kumiko. Accepting this, she chose to support his feelings for Kumiko instead. Though they grew somewhat distant afterward, they remained on good terms.
In the concert band, Hazuki is part of the bass section and receives occasional encouragement from senior member Riko Nagase. She shares a bond with Natsuki Nakagawa, as both were members of the subgroup Team Monaka, a connection further explored in an OVA.
Her favorite colors are yellow and orange. Her hobbies include playing tennis, and she has a special skill in karate from her younger years. The tuba she plays is modeled on the Yamaha YBB-641.
Her given name, Hazuki, combines the characters for "leaf" (葉) and "moon" (月), and is also the traditional name for August, meaning "month of leaves." Her surname, Katou, combines "add, increase" (加) and "wisteria" (藤).
