Mitsuha Miyamizu hails from the rural town of Itomori, where she served as a shrine maiden in her family's Shinto tradition alongside her grandmother and younger sister. Her duties included performing rituals like crafting kuchikamizake, an offering of fermented sake, though initial embarrassment arose from classmates' teasing. Frustrated by small-town life, she wished aloud to live as a boy in Tokyo—a desire that triggered intermittent body-swapping experiences with Taki Tachibana, a Tokyo high school student three years her future. During these exchanges, they inhabited each other's lives, maintained strict personal boundaries, and forged a deep connection despite being strangers.
Navigating Taki’s urban existence, Mitsuha displayed adaptability and organizational skills, appreciating Tokyo’s vibrancy while finding his part-time jobs stressful. Her kindness and determination bloomed into adventurousness, contrasting with her earlier discontent. While in Taki’s body, her actions inadvertently deepened his bond with his crush, Miki Okudera, even as Mitsuha developed romantic feelings for Taki. She later journeyed to Tokyo to find him, gifting her woven red, blue, and yellow-orange braided cord before leaving.
Mitsuha became pivotal during Itomori’s impending disaster when a comet fragment threatened the town. Learning of the catastrophe through Taki (occupying her body during the crisis), she orchestrated an evacuation by confronting her father, the mayor. Her efforts saved hundreds, though the comet destroyed Itomori. Relocating to Tokyo afterward, she reunited years later with Taki during a chance train passing after their memories faded, rekindling their bond.
By 2021, Mitsuha worked as a jewelry saleswoman at MocA Tokyo in LUMINE department store, politely advising Hodaka Morishima on a ring for Hina Amano and wishing him success. Her appearance featured shoulder-length black hair partially tied in a small braid secured by her signature cord, a light-colored shirt, cardigan, and a necklace.
She married Taki Tachibana by 2024, taking his surname while retaining her braided cord styled in her hair. Their wedding photo appeared in the home of Taki’s grandmother, Fumi Tachibana. This timeline persisted despite contradictions from Tokyo’s weather anomalies, as unrelated continuous rain flooded parts of the city by 2024.
