Description
Atsushi Kitamoto is a sensible, rational, and mature student at Yowake High School, recognized by his short brown hair and brown eyes. Standing slightly taller than Takashi Natsume, he is typically seen in the school uniform of a white collar shirt and grey pants, adding winter coats and scarves in colder months. One of the first classmates to befriend Natsume after his transfer, their friendship began awkwardly when Natsume mistook him for a yokai. Kitamoto appreciated Natsume's sincere apology and observation that Nishimura deserved a kind friend like him, warming to Natsume and forming a trio.

Kitamoto shares a deep childhood friendship with the more outgoing Satoru Nishimura, often acting as a grounding influence and mediator. He respects boundaries, assuring Natsume he need not feel pressured into activities. Kitamoto remains unaware of Natsume's ability to see yokai throughout the series.

Contemplative and responsible, Kitamoto prioritizes supporting his family after his father's serious illness. This duty shapes his future plans, leading him to consider stable public service over personal dreams. He cares for his father and his younger sister, Mana Kitamoto, sharing a close bond despite occasional disagreements, and prefers hearty "working man's" meals over Mana's creatively arranged lunches.

His role expands when Kaname Tanuma transfers. The manga places Kitamoto and Tanuma in Class 1-5, while the anime initially has Kitamoto in Class 2 with Natsume and Nishimura before later aligning with the manga. Kitamoto includes Tanuma in their social circle, forming a quartet, unaware of Tanuma's limited ability to sense spirits. He is protective of his friends, defending them against rumors and showing concern during unexplained incidents, like witnessing Natsume seemingly threatened by an invisible force. During this encounter, Kitamoto helped Natsume recover a lost bell, inadvertently aiding in resolving a supernatural conflict he later dismissed as "strange" without probing.

Kitamoto grapples with balancing familial obligations and personal aspirations, fearing the loss of his home and family – a concern heightened by Natsume's orphaned background. This motivates him to value honesty in relationships, reflecting on Natsume's deep attachment to their town. He participates in school activities, notably playing a lead role in a Shakespeare performance during the school festival.
