Description
Chrono Shindou, written in kanji as 新導クロノ ("Shindō" signifying "New Lead," "Chrono" relating to time), is a Virgo born on September 9 with blood type A. Orphaned early – his mother died shortly after his birth and his father vanished ten years before the main events – he spent time in an orphanage until his paternal aunt, Mikuru Shindou, took guardianship. Initially 14 and aging to 15, Chrono earned a delinquent reputation at school fueled by anti-social tendencies, low self-esteem, and a reliance on violence to solve conflicts, leaving him feared and burdened by a desire for independence. Disinterest defined him until discovering a Gear Chronicle Vanguard deck in his locker, complete with a map to Card Capital 2. Intrigued by a card bearing his name, he learned the game from Kamui Katsuragi, winning his first match via Stride and igniting a passion for Vanguard's themes of new futures.
Embarking on quests via the Vanguard network, Chrono rose to Grade 1 and formed Team TRY3 with classmates Tokoha Anjou and Shion Kiba, overcoming initial friction. His dueling showcased strong imagination and athleticism, yet he remained gullible and socially awkward, struggling to communicate without seeming rude or intimidating. Relationships deepened through Vanguard: his view of Tokoha shifted from seeing her as nagging to developing hidden feelings he concealed for her protection, while his rivalry with Shion transformed into mutual respect and friendship, solidified after helping Shion rediscover his passion. Chrono's connection to the game extended beyond the cards; he could hear voices from Planet Cray and physically interact with its units through Gear Chronicle Singularity, possessing spiritual power noted as potentially surpassing predecessors like Aichi Sendou with training. Resolving the Stride Gate crisis earned him temporary ownership of the Zeroth Dragon of End of the World, Dust.
Later, Chrono enrolled at Tokyo Metropolitan Harumi High School, worked part-time at Card Capital 2, and formed Team Striders with Taiyou Asukawa and Kazuma Shouji for the U20 Championship after TRY3 separated. His personality matured; he became proactive in supporting others, exemplified by encouraging Kazuma past his fear of losing. His bond with Cray intensified, and he gained PSYqualia during interdimensional threats. A pivotal defeat by Dragon Deity of Destruction, Gyze, cost him his G Zone, later regained after performing Dimensional Overstride with Chrono Dran.
Chrono faced possession by Gyze, altering his eyes first to gold, then ruby red to match his hair. This merger created a colder, more calculated persona fluent in multiple languages. As Gyze's vessel and leader of the Apostles, he adopted titles like "Master of the Void" and "Singularity of Multiverse." He nearly became Gyze's permanent embodiment but was saved by Tokoha, bonded with Messiah, ensuring their fates remained linked through a dyad bond. Post-conflict, Chrono reconciled with former allies, including Shion, and TRY3 reunited under the Three Dragon Deities. His Vanguard Circle color is consistently violet-red.
