TV-Series
Description
Chrono Shindō is a male human with striking green eyes and a head of messy red hair marked by a distinctive pink swirl at its center. His appearance undergoes several changes as his story progresses. He first appears in a purple school uniform worn over a red shirt. This later gives way to a blue jacket with brown trousers and black boots, followed by a white sleeveless jacket trimmed in black. Another outfit consists of a red jacket with black and white linings, a yellow t-shirt, and white trousers. His high school uniform at Tokyo Metropolitan Harumi High School is a blue suit, white shirt, red tie, and black trousers. One of his casual outfits is a black v-neck jumper rolled to the elbows over a white t-shirt, paired with skinny turquoise jeans and gray lace-up sneakers worn without socks.

His early life was difficult. His mother died soon after he was born, and his father vanished roughly a decade before the main narrative. With his only relative, his aunt Mikuru, being too young to care for him, he was sent to an orphanage. This experience deeply affected his social development, fostering a loner's complex and anti-social behavior. He grew up with a profound sense of having nothing and thought very little of himself, developing a fear of loneliness even as he desired solitude. When Mikuru became an adult, she became his legal guardian and brought him to live with her, though he was often left alone. Aiming for independence, he sometimes avoided her so as not to feel like a burden. At school, his easily irritable nature, bored demeanor, and tendency to solve problems with violence earned him a reputation as a delinquent who intimidated his peers. He has a strong aversion to anyone mocking the swirl in his hair.

His entire personality shifts after he discovers the card game Vanguard. Initially unmotivated and bored by a monotonous daily life, he was characterized by a cold, uninterested expression, low and incomplete speech, and poor social skills that inadvertently intimidated people. The game ignited a passionate interest in him, leading to a complete transformation. It helped him develop better social abilities and form meaningful relationships, though he remained gullible and prone to believing exaggerated or false stories. He is selfless, rash, and stubborn, with a powerful sense of justice that drives him to confront wrongdoing, sometimes with physical force or harsh words. He has a strong capacity for sympathy, especially for orphans and those with low self-esteem, and is generally well-liked by younger children. He values the passionate feeling of a fight more than victory or defeat and considers his cards from the Gear Chronicle clan to be his friends. Over time, he learns to enjoy social gatherings and becomes more engaged, though he can still be brooding and aloof at school with a serious expression. It has been observed that he can be easily motivated by rage.

He exhibits several unique abilities. He possesses above-average luck, suggested to potentially be a powerful will capable of changing fate in his favor. He has a strong imagination, considered a valuable skill for a cardfighter. He is able to hear the voices of beings from the planet Cray, the setting of the Vanguard game. He also demonstrates incredible athletic prowess and is proficient in domestic chores like cooking, a skill honed from years of having to take care of himself.

His involvement with Vanguard began when he found a Gear Chronicle deck and a map to Card Capital 2 left anonymously in his school locker. Intrigued by a card that shared his name, he went to the shop and was taught how to play by Kamui Katsuragi, winning his first fight using the Stride technique. The victory and the concept of Stride, which represents the possibility of a new future, fascinated him, and he decided to learn more about the game. He began taking quests on the VG network, often competing against Team Trinity Dragon, and gradually improved his skills. During this period, he had significant encounters, including one with Kouji Ibuki, who pointed out his loneliness and defeated him in a fight, and with Shion Kiba and Tokoha Anjou, whose initially unpleasant interactions with him eventually developed into friendship.

He, along with Shion Kiba and Tokoha Anjou, was reluctantly formed into a team by Kamui Katsuragi, which they named Team TRY3. Their teamwork was initially poor, marked by constant bickering and a lack of harmony, but they became determined to succeed after a loss to Team Trinity Dragon. They entered a national tournament but were defeated in the regional qualifier by Team Demise. After this loss, his aunt revealed that his father's disappearance was connected to Vanguard. Team TRY3 later confronted the United Sanctuary branch, which was brainwashing fighters, and during this conflict, he received a blank Depend Card from Kamui. After a subsequent victory over Kouji Ibuki, this card transformed into a new unit, Chrono Dran. Ibuki revealed there were eleven other Depend Cards and that someone was seeking all of them; it was also revealed that Ibuki had been the one sending him Gear Chronicle cards.

He played a key role in resolving the Stride Gate incident. Following this event, he temporarily possessed the Zeroth Dragon of the Dark Zone, Zeroth Dragon of End of the World, Dust, after a victory over Gastille. He later lost this, along with his G Zone, after a defeat against the Dragon Deity of Destruction, Gyze, but regained his abilities after performing a Dimensional Overstride with Chrono Dran.

Five months after the Stride Gate incident and the battle against the Company, the members of Team TRY3 decided to separate and enroll in different high schools. He transferred to Tokyo Metropolitan Harumi High School and took a part-time job at Card Capital 2, also assuming the role of Generation Master to fight challengers. He formed a new team, Team Striders, with Taiyou Asukawa and a gloomy classmate named Kazuma Shouji, in order to enter the Vanguard U20 Championship. This decision was prompted by a defeat from the reigning U20 champion, Kazumi Onimaru. He worked to help Kazuma overcome his fear of losing and become a dedicated team member.

The name "Shindō" translates to "New Lead" in Japanese, and his first name "Chrono" means "time."
