Description
Lupin travels alone to Corcaca, a Mediterranean island, drawn by rumors of the Hemingway Papers – an Ernest Hemingway manuscript said to reveal a massive hidden treasure. He operates independently, driven by the challenge of securing this valuable artifact.

His arrival coincides with separate missions by his associates on the war-torn island. Jigen works as a bodyguard for rebel leader Consano, partly motivated by a personal vendetta against the mercenary Crazy Mash. Goemon serves as bodyguard for President Carlos, primarily intrigued by rumors of a chest impervious to his sword, the Zantetsuken. This separation forces Lupin to navigate the island's civil war while pursuing the manuscript.

Lupin encounters Maria, owner of the only functioning bar in a ruined town. Despite her initial reluctance and hostility towards outsiders, especially treasure hunters she blames for the island's devastation, he gradually earns her cooperation through charm and shared circumstances. He intervenes to protect her from assault by Consano's soldiers. Later, he learns she is the sole survivor of the Scorpions, a native resistance group destroyed years earlier by Carlos and Consano.

Amidst the conflict, Lupin actively works to reunite his scattered team. He facilitates meetings at Maria's bar, leveraging it as neutral ground. He strategizes to prevent Jigen and Goemon from killing each other during duels orchestrated by Carlos and Consano, demonstrating leadership and concern. His quick thinking devises non-lethal resolutions to their forced confrontations.

Securing the physical Hemingway Papers proves difficult. After obtaining the manuscript, Lupin demonstrates foresight and practicality by using a microfilm camera hidden in his tie clip to photograph the documents, anticipating he might lose the originals. This preparation allows the group to continue deciphering the treasure's location after the papers are gone.

Driven by clues in Hemingway's account, Lupin leads the group – Maria, Fujiko, Jigen, and Goemon – towards a legendary underground palace in the southern valley, known locally as the "valley of death." Discovering the treasure, a vast natural deposit of radioactive material (Uranium-238), he immediately recognizes the danger. He pragmatically abandons the pursuit, prioritizing the group's safety over potential wealth, acknowledging the material's lethal nature.

Following the demise of Carlos and Consano during a torrential downpour in the treacherous valley, Lupin interacts with Maria one final time. He clarifies his actions leading to their deaths weren't motivated by avenging her brother or the Scorpions, though he expresses grim satisfaction at their fate. Before departing the island without the treasure, he shares a moment with Maria, implying a potential future return.
