TV Special
Description
Lupin III, grandson of the fictional gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, operates as a globally recognized master thief known for high-profile heists. His expertise encompasses sophisticated disguises, technical gadgetry, and elaborate planning, enabling seemingly impossible thefts. In "Bye Bye, Lady Liberty," Lupin initially retires upon discovering global police databases can predict his behavior patterns, nullifying his traditional methods. Financial ruin forces his return, specifically targeting the "Super Egg" diamond concealed within the Statue of Liberty. His solution involves stealing the entire statue using an inflatable balloon device, demonstrating characteristic audacity and unconventional problem-solving.

Throughout the special, Lupin adapts resourcefully. He utilizes explosive homing ducks for diversion, jet-propelled shoes for escape, and excels in hand-to-hand combat. His interactions reveal key traits: a self-serving nature focused on clearing his substantial debt and erasing police records, balanced by moments of protectiveness, particularly toward Michael, a child linked to antagonist Isabel Silverman. Despite primarily opportunistic motives, he assists Michael in averting a global nuclear crisis triggered by the "Neovirus," showcasing capacity for responsibility in extreme circumstances.

Lupin's relationships with recurring associates remain complex. He collaborates with Daisuke Jigen on the heist, rescues Fujiko Mine after her possession by the Three Masons, and inadvertently involves Goemon Ishikawa XIII through Goemon’s association with Isabel. His dynamic with Inspector Zenigata persists as a rivalry, though they exhibit mutual, grudging respect during the climactic confrontation. Loyalty within his group surfaces intermittently; despite Fujiko’s betrayal during the diamond exchange, Lupin ensures her safety.

The antagonists, the secret society Three Masons (called "Conquer the Universe, Inc." in some dubs), drive the conflict. Lupin clashes directly with Jimmy (Number 3) and Isabel Silverman (Number 2), a computer scientist who created the Neovirus. Isabel, revealed as Michael’s mother, manipulates Goemon for her goals. Lupin’s confrontation culminates in Jimmy’s defeat and Isabel’s death. Lupin then attempts to exploit the Neovirus for personal gain—erasing his criminal records and debts—though the success remains ambiguous.

Lupin’s background in the special aligns with his broader characterization: a thrill-seeking thief motivated by challenge and personal gain, yet capable of unexpected heroism facing larger threats. His skills in deduction, marksmanship, and gadget invention remain consistent, as does his enjoyment of outwitting authorities and criminals alike.
