TV-Series
Description
Mei Mei is a giant panda who spent her early life in a research facility in China. Lacking formal education, she likely received private tutoring. She arrives at Seton Academy with her manager, Fonfon, as a globally recognized panda idol boasting an estimated fanbase of 1.3 billion members, reflecting China's population. Initially characterized by extreme entitlement and demanding behavior, she is accustomed to preferential treatment and specific luxuries like her preferred variety of Chinese bamboo, Umbrella Bamboo (Fargesia Spathacea).
Attracted by the aroma of panda dumplings, she encounters the Cooking Club, consumes all the dumplings, and demands more. Jin Mazama's refusal and subsequent harsh treatment—forcing her to work and clean up food she threw—markedly contrasts with her prior experiences. Unexpectedly, she develops an enjoyment of this abrasive dynamic, displaying masochistic tendencies. Her desire to join the Cooking Club leads her to attempt bribing members, but Jin imposes the condition of unanimous approval, particularly from the aloof cat Kurumi Nekomai.
To win Kurumi's acceptance, Mei Mei endures confinement in a cage overnight, demonstrating newfound determination. During this time, she expresses that her interactions with Jin represent the first genuine enjoyment she has experienced. Relating to Mei Mei's feelings, Kurumi ultimately shows affection, facilitating her official acceptance into the club. A subsequent tradition involving licking the "boss" for welcome results in Mei Mei licking Jin instead of Ranka Ōkami, further highlighting her complex relationship with him.
Her character evolves from a spoiled figure to a more cooperative club member, though her enjoyment of Jin's criticisms persists. She experiences self-consciousness regarding her physical appearance, particularly exhibiting A-Cup Angst when comparing herself to other female club members. A significant manga-exclusive storyline involves an arranged breeding contract with a male panda, which causes her distress. The contract is annulled when the male deems her "not his type," though an omake reveals his actual concern was about an idol maintaining her career.
Bilingual in Mandarin (her native language) and Japanese, she holds the distinction of being the first Chinese animal character in the series. Following her introduction, background panda students were phased out, making her the sole giant panda at the academy. In a future timeline, she transitions into a career as a producer for an idol agency.
