Description
Miku Kohinata is a central supporting character in the anime Symphogear AXZ, serving as the childhood friend and closest companion of the protagonist Hibiki Tachibana. She shares a dormitory with Hibiki at their school and is deeply invested in her well-being. Miku’s background reveals that she was once a competitive track-and-field athlete who viewed others primarily as rivals and struggled to consider other people’s feelings. After meeting Hibiki, who consistently helped others despite being bullied and hid her own pain behind a smile, Miku underwent a significant personal change. She quit track, transferred to Lydian, and took up piano as a way to express emotions she found difficult to voice. Her personality is generally helpful and cheerful, but she is perpetually anxious about the dangers Hibiki faces as a Symphogear user. This anxiety sometimes manifests as a hidden possessive streak, born from a deep desire to protect Hibiki from harm. Miku’s primary motivation revolves around supporting Hibiki and ensuring she has a warm, safe place to return to after her battles. In the story, Miku initially struggles with Hibiki keeping secrets about her powers, but she eventually comes to fully support her, even while wishing she did not have to fight. Her role is that of an emotional anchor and moral support for the entire team, and she occasionally participates in operations as a non-combatant member of Section Two. During the events leading up to AXZ, she was forcibly turned into a temporary Symphogear user through the LiNKER drug, wielding the relic Shenshoujing. This gear takes the form of armor inspired by a Chinese dress and hakama, and its primary ability is to generate light-based attacks that can erase other relics on contact. The Shenshoujing’s Armed Gear resembles a large metallic folding fan, and the gear can also deploy whip-like cables for combat. Unlike most Symphogears, it can fly without needing to access the X-Drive, though it never uses an X-Drive, Ignite Module, or Superb Song during Miku’s brief period of use. The relic is vulnerable to simple mirrors due to the nature of its light attacks. Miku’s relationship with Hibiki is the emotional core of her character; their bond evolves from childhood friendship into a deep mutual reliance, with Miku often described as the warmest place Hibiki can go to. Over the course of the series, Miku demonstrates remarkable physical endurance, such as outrunning Noise for extended periods, hinting at capabilities beyond those of an ordinary human even without her gear. In AXZ, her backstory regarding her past competitiveness and her growth in learning to care for others is further explored, solidifying her development from a self-focused individual to a selfless supporter.
