Description
Ayumu Uehara is a main character in Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club and a second-year student at Nijigasaki High School. She is a member of the sub-unit A・ZU・NA, and her image color is light pink. Ayumu is portrayed as an ordinary girl with no exceptional talents who was initially content with living a normal high school life. Her journey into becoming a school idol began when she and her best friend, Yu Takasaki, stumbled upon a school idol performance for the first time, which opened a new path in her world. Despite having no initial ability to sing or dance, she ventured forward to become a school idol herself.

Ayumu has a hardworking personality and puts great effort into everything she does. She does not believe she is very skilled at her school idol activities but continues to try her hardest to excel in them, often feeling insecure about her abilities. Her struggles largely revolve around confidence and how that relates to her path toward her dream as a school idol. She is kind, cheerful, and friendly, though somewhat shy and prone to clumsiness at times. Ayumu is also innocent and sincere, often responding to mischief from other club members like Karin Asaka and Kasumi Nakasu in a pure manner that throws them off guard. She tries her best to be helpful to others and has a generally positive nature.

One of Ayumu's most defining characteristics is her deep attachment to her childhood best friend, Yu Takasaki, with whom she grew up as neighbors in the same apartment building in Odaiba. She is very protective of this relationship, which manifests in jealous glances when Yu interacts with or praises other girls, as well as disheartened remarks when Yu claims she cannot pick a favorite. In moments of satire or humor, her personality can be depicted as extremely controlling, even displaying what fans have humorously described as yandere tendencies, such as pulling Yu aside to isolate her from other club members. However, these depictions are generally understood as exaggerated jokes rather than serious character traits.

Ayumu's motivation for becoming a school idol differs slightly across adaptations. In the anime, she becomes a school idol because she wants to, though when Yu seems to be drifting away as more girls join the club, she begins to reconsider whether she wants to continue without her best friend by her side. She eventually realizes that she became a school idol for herself, with or without Yu, and that their friendship will endure regardless of whether they walk the same path. In the game continuity, she initially becomes a school idol because the player loved school idols, but when conflict arises, she discovers that she has come to love being a school idol for her own sake.

Ayumu's role in the story is central, as her relationship with Yu serves as an emotional anchor for the series. Her character development focuses on gaining independence and self-confidence. A key moment occurs when she confesses that she became a school idol because she wanted Yu to watch her perform, but she feels she is distancing herself from Yu due to the support she receives from others. Through encouragement from fellow club member Setsuna Yuki and reassurance from Yu, she learns to see things through and gains confidence in her own identity as an idol. By the end of this arc, she is shown warmly smiling in sharp contrast to her earlier anxious expression, indicating her growth.

In terms of abilities, Ayumu is not naturally gifted as a performer, but her hardworking nature drives her to improve steadily. Outside of school idol activities, she has some unexpected talents. She likes playing Pokémon and tries to study fashion and other typically feminine interests. She is also unexpectedly good at video games due to her diligent personality. According to Setsuna Yuki, Ayumu has a serious mode when she plays something she likes. She also demonstrates some fluency in English, as she is shown understanding an email from a fan in the United Kingdom and traveling abroad. Her favorite flavor of ice cream is strawberry.
