Description
Haruka Ōyama is a central character in Mix: Meisei Story, known for her intelligence, passion for baseball, and pivotal role as the manager of the Meisei High School baseball team. She is the daughter of Gorō Ōyama, the team's coach, and moves with him from Kyushu to Meisei at the end of her junior high school career, while her separated parents remain undivorced and her mother pursues a writing career.
Initially, Haruka is a talented member of the rhythmic gymnastics club, where she excels and quickly rises through the ranks. Her deep interest in baseball, however, is evident from the start, as she frequently ventures onto the baseball field to offer unsolicited advice to the players, often earning reprimands from her gymnastics coach for neglecting her own practice. Her path changes dramatically when she falls from an old referee's chair while gathering data on an opposing team, breaking her arm and ending her gymnastics career. Following this injury, she successfully transitions into the role of the baseball team's dedicated trainer and manager, a position in which she excels and remains even after the gymnastics club disbands.
Personality-wise, Haruka is consistently kind, supportive, and optimistic. She is not afraid to speak her mind and possesses a notably sharp, analytical mind for baseball, often seeing the long-term strategy and the bigger picture in a way that rivals, and sometimes surpasses, her father's understanding of the game. Her strategic thinking is a major asset, making her invaluable for scouting rivals and developing game plans. She is also known for her love of puzzles, to the point where she becomes intensely focused until she finds a solution, a trait that once led her to take Toma Tachibana on a long, spontaneous walk.
Her most significant relationships are with the Tachibana stepbrothers, Toma and Soichiro. She shares a unique history with Toma, having first met him at the age of three during his mother's funeral, where she famously poured a soda on him to stop his disruptive crying. She considers this their first meeting and the start of their childhood friendship, a memory Toma himself does not share. In high school, both brothers develop romantic feelings for her; Soichiro is smitten almost immediately, while Toma shares a more harmonious and easygoing rapport with her. Haruka, however, maintains a strictly platonic friendship with both, often clashing with the more short-sighted and hot-headed Soichiro over their differing approaches to baseball and life, while getting along much better with the calmer Toma. Her position as the team's manager also makes her a focal point for other characters, such as the powerful hitter Shirō Nangō, whose transfer to Meisei is partially motivated by a desire to stay near her.
Over the course of the story, Haruka develops from a talented gymnast with a keen interest in baseball into the full-fledged manager whose holistic dedication is crucial to the team's operation and success. She not only handles the training and physical conditioning of the players but also contributes to tactical planning, player development, and scouting, all with the ultimate goal of helping the Meisei baseball team reach the national championships at Koshien. Her knowledge, opportunistic yet optimistic outlook, and unwavering support make her an indispensable part of the team's journey.
