Description
Ganta Igarashi, originally named Maruta, was conceived by his mother Sorae Igarashi as a human experiment subject. Shortly after birth, Sorae's maternal instincts compelled her to spare him, substituting an albino girl named Shiro in his place. Unaware of the brutal experiments inflicted upon her, Ganta formed a close childhood bond with Shiro at a Tokyo research facility. This ended when he witnessed her alternate personality, the Wretched Egg, slaughter researchers. The trauma inflicted severe psychological shock, erasing his memories of Shiro and the incident. Sorae subsequently sent him to live with his father in Nagano Prefecture. There, he attended middle school and befriended classmates Mimi and Yamakatsu.
In 2023, during a school discussion about a class trip, Ganta encountered the "Red Man" – later revealed as Shiro's Wretched Egg persona – who massacred his entire class. The Red Man implanted a red crystal in Ganta's chest, granting him a "Branch of Sin" power. Lawyer Tsunenaga Tamaki then framed Ganta for the murders using falsified evidence during his trial, resulting in a death sentence and incarceration in the private prison Deadman Wonderland as Prisoner 5580.
Initially fearful and overwhelmed by the prison's brutality, Ganta focused solely on survival and avenging his classmates by hunting the Red Man. His Branch of Sin power, dubbed the "Ganta Gun" by fellow inmate Senji, allowed him to project blood as bullets. This ability risked anemia, fainting, or hallucinations from excessive blood loss. Early prison experiences included reuniting with Shiro, who recognized him, and participating in lethal contests like the "Dog Race" to earn life-sustaining "Candy." These events forced him to confront his will to live and protect others, exemplified when he saved Shiro during the race despite forfeiting victory.
As a "Deadman," Ganta fought in gladiatorial battles called Carnival Corpse under the alias "Woodpecker." His combat style evolved from long-range attacks to incorporating close-quarters tactics and environmental strategy. Key developments included:
- Mastering the blood-efficient "Supersonic Ganta Gun" through Senji's training.
- Unlocking the physically taxing "Ganbare Gun" during intense emotional strain, marked by a tattoo-like pattern spreading from his chest crystal.
- Joining the resistance group Scar Chain to expose the prison's atrocities, though he stayed behind to confront the Red Man after their escape failed.
Scar Chain's betrayal and ally Nagi's death plunged Ganta into depression, making him question his purpose. He later resolved to protect his remaining friends and end Tamaki's tyranny. A pivotal revelation exposed Shiro as the Wretched Egg and the true perpetrator of his suffering. He learned his mother's role in Shiro's transformation and that his Branch of Sin was a "key" to activating or destroying the Mother Goose System controlling Shiro's powers. Though torn by rage and love, he rejected killing her without understanding her trauma.
In the final battle, Ganta confronted Shiro after she fully succumbed to the Wretched Egg. Their clash destroyed Deadman Wonderland, shattering their embedded crystals and nullifying their powers. Ganta was later exonerated and released. He visited a comatose Shiro daily at a hospital, reuniting with her upon her awakening. His character arc concluded with a matured perspective: fear was not an obstacle to eliminate, but a challenge to acknowledge and overcome through connection with others.
