Description
Armin Arlert grew up orphaned in Shiganshina District within Wall Maria, raised by his grandfather after his parents died attempting to explore the outside world in a hot air balloon. His grandfather possessed an illegal book depicting oceans and deserts beyond the walls, sparking Armin's intense curiosity and dream of seeing the outside world. This fascination led to bullying from other children, who called him a heretic. Eren Yeager defended him during one attack, forging their close friendship, later including Mikasa Ackerman. Armin's grandfather died during the mission to reclaim Wall Maria after its breach.
Physically frail but intellectually gifted, Armin ranked among the top trainees in the 104th Cadet Corps despite struggling with combat skills and self-doubt. He graduated fifth in his class and joined the Survey Corps with Eren and Mikasa. His strategic brilliance proved vital: he devised the plan to retake Trost District's supply depot during a Titan attack, identified Annie Leonhart as the Female Titan, formulated the strategy to capture her, and orchestrated sealing Wall Rose's breach. These successes earned recognition from commanders like Erwin Smith and Levi Ackerman, though Armin still wrestled with feelings of inadequacy.
During the battle to reclaim Shiganshina, Armin sacrificed himself as flaming bait against Bertholdt Hoover's Colossal Titan, suffering near-fatal burns. Commander Erwin Smith lay mortally wounded nearby, prompting a fierce debate over the single Titan serum. Levi chose Armin, who transformed into a Pure Titan, consumed Bertholdt, inherited the Colossal Titan, and regained human form. This act triggered profound guilt, trauma, and survivor's remorse over Erwin's death. Armin later expressed conflicted emotions, particularly when using the Colossal Titan's power caused massive destruction during the attack on Liberio.
Following the timeskip, Armin became the 15th commander of the Survey Corps after Hange Zoë's death. His leadership faced internal conflict over Eren's increasingly violent methods. He participated in the assault on Liberio, destroying its port, and later confronted Eren's genocidal Rumbling. Though initially hesitant to oppose his childhood friend, Armin eventually joined the alliance to stop Eren. During the final battle, he was swallowed by a Titan, entered the Paths dimension, convinced Zeke Yeager to cease supporting the Rumbling by appealing to shared memories of life's small beauties, and confronted Eren within the Paths in a tense dialogue before comforting him.
Armin's personality evolved from timid and self-effacing to resolute yet burdened by moral compromises. He consistently demonstrated loyalty, volunteering for life-threatening situations to protect friends. His belief that "a person who cannot sacrifice everything cannot change anything" guided his willingness to use ruthless tactics, like deceiving Bertholdt about Annie's torture for tactical advantage. Despite this pragmatism, he maintained empathy, experiencing visceral guilt after violent acts like killing a Marleyan soldier to save Jean Kirschtein. He developed a romantic connection with Annie Leonhart, regularly visiting her during her crystallized imprisonment and later fighting alongside her.
After Eren's death, Armin claimed responsibility for killing him to shield Mikasa from political repercussions. He served as a peace ambassador, negotiating with surviving nations to share the story of the battle and advocate for coexistence. In his final known act, he facilitated communication between Paradis Island and the outside world, seeking to break the cycle of conflict.
