Description
Armin Arlelt hails from Shiganshina District within Wall Maria. His parents died attempting to explore the outside world using an experimental hot air balloon, executed for their actions by the Military Police. Raised afterward by his grandfather, Armin found an illegal book in his grandfather's possession depicting oceans, deserts, and other wonders beyond the Walls; this ignited his lifelong curiosity about the external world. He shared this forbidden knowledge with childhood friends Eren Jaeger and Mikasa Ackermann, fostering their shared dream of seeing the ocean. Frequently bullied for his intellectual interests and frail physique, Armin relied on Eren and Mikasa for protection, contributing to persistent feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.
After the fall of Wall Maria, Armin's grandfather perished during the failed human counteroffensive to retake the territory. Orphaned, Armin enlisted alongside Eren and Mikasa in the 104th Cadet Corps. Despite ranking at the bottom in combat skills during training, his exceptional strategic intellect earned recognition. Upon graduation, he joined the Survey Corps, where his analytical abilities became invaluable. Key tactical contributions included devising the plan to capture the Female Titan in Stohess District and identifying Reiner Braun and Bertholdt Hoover as the Armored and Colossal Titans.
During the battle to reclaim Shiganshina, Armin formulated a sacrificial plan to defeat Bertholdt, sustaining near-fatal burns. Commander Levi chose to save Armin over Erwin Smith using Titan serum, leading to Armin inheriting the Colossal Titan by consuming Bertholdt. This transformation resolved his physical fragility but intensified psychological burdens, including survivor's guilt and moral conflict over the brutal method of gaining this power. Following Commander Hange Zoë's death, Armin was appointed the 15th commander of the Survey Corps.
Post-timeskip, Armin's role expanded into diplomacy and leadership amid escalating conflicts. He participated in the raid on Liberio, where his use of the Colossal Titan to destroy the harbor caused massive casualties, leaving him visibly traumatized. As Eren Jaeger initiated the Rumbling, Armin opposed his genocidal campaign, forming an alliance with former enemies, including Marleyan warriors, to stop him. During the Battle of Heaven and Earth, Armin entered the Paths dimension, convincing Zeke Yeager to sacrifice himself to halt the Rumbling and coordinating with past Titan shifters to aid the fight.
Armin's final conversation with Eren in the Paths revealed Eren's motivations and the inevitability of his death. After Mikasa killed Eren, Armin claimed responsibility to shield her from repercussions, facilitating negotiations with surviving Marleyan forces. Post-war, he worked as an ambassador promoting peace between Eldia and other nations, leveraging his diplomatic skills to mitigate future conflicts.
Throughout his development, Armin maintained core traits of intellectual curiosity, empathy, and moral ambivalence. He believed sacrificing humanity was sometimes necessary for greater goals, yet struggled emotionally after violent actions, such as killing to protect Jean Kirschtein or during the Liberio attack. His worldview rejected absolute morality, acknowledging that "good" and "evil" depended on perspective. This allowed him to devise morally complex strategies, often surprising comrades but never Eren or Mikasa, who recognized this capacity early.
Key relationships defined his journey: his bond with Eren and Mikasa formed his emotional foundation, while his connection with Annie Leonhart evolved from mutual respect during training to romantic affection, solidified by their cooperation in the final battle and shared commitment to peace. Interactions with mentors like Erwin Smith and Hange Zoë influenced his leadership philosophy, though he initially struggled with self-doubt in command roles.
