TV-Series
Description
Onyankopon is a dark-skinned man with black hair styled in a short crew cut and thin eyebrows, possessing a well-built physique with large arms and shoulders. He typically wears a Marleyan military uniform featuring two black stripes or harnesses down the torso, or casual attire consisting of a dark or navy blue jacket over a dress shirt with long pants. His distinctive appearance marks him as one of the few Black individuals in the series.
Originally from a country occupied by Marley, Onyankopon faced forced conscription into the Marleyan military. Alongside fellow soldiers, Zeke Yeager recruited him into the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers, a group covertly opposing Marleyan rule. He arrived on Paradis Island around 851 as part of Marley's first survey fleet after their failed operation to retrieve the Founding Titan. Eren Yeager and the Survey Corps captured his ship. When his commanding officer refused to negotiate with Hange Zoë, Onyankopon joined Yelena in disarming their superiors and surrendering, forming an alliance with Paradis Island.
As an Anti-Marleyan Volunteer, Onyankopon shared advanced technology with Paradis, focusing on strategic preparations for the island's reintegration with the outside world. He proposed the construction of a harbor—a concept only Hange initially grasped—and facilitated meetings between the Survey Corps and Kiyomi Azumabito in Marley. A skilled pilot, he operated an airship during the Survey Corps' retreat from Liberio in 854, rescuing Armin Arlert after the harbor's destruction and navigating the escape route under Hange's direction.
Following their return to Paradis, distrust of Zeke's faction led to Onyankopon and the Volunteers' imprisonment. During captivity, he expressed dismay at the betrayal, reminding Hange of their three-year collaboration. He revealed Yelena's history of executing Marleyan soldiers who suspected the Volunteers' treason but claimed ignorance of her secret meeting with Eren before the Liberio attack. After a bombing killed military officials, Hange provided Onyankopon an alibi, verifying his whereabouts.
Onyankopon accompanied Hange to investigate the discovery that Marleyan prisoners, including Niccolo, had spiked wine with Zeke's spinal fluid to turn officials into Titans. Despite insisting he had no prior knowledge of the plan, Yeagerists captured him and the Survey Corps members during the confrontation. Transported to Shiganshina District, he attended Yelena's meeting to accept Dot Pixis's surrender and later visited the imprisoned Survey Corps. When tensions escalated during this visit, Yelena executed Griez, horrifying Onyankopon, who assisted in removing the body.
During Marley's surprise attack on Shiganshina, Onyankopon freed soldiers imprisoned by the Yeagerists to bolster Paradis's defense. He was assaulted by Connie Springer due to lingering suspicions but pleaded innocence regarding the spiked wine and Zeke's euthanasia plan. He argued that Zeke's cooperation was essential to activate the Rumbling for Paradis's defense, convincing the group to fight alongside him. After Eren initiated the Rumbling, Zeke's Titans attacked indiscriminately, and the Survey Corps rescued Onyankopon. Learning of Eren's plan to destroy the entire world, he despaired over his homeland's impending destruction.
Refusing Floch Forster's offer of honorary Eldian status post-Rumbling, Onyankopon was sentenced to public execution. At sentencing, he condemned the Eldians for replicating Marley's violence and reiterated his original goal of liberating his homeland. He was saved when Jean Kirstein's staged gunshots missed him, and Pieck Finger's Cart Titan extracted him and Yelena. Joining Hange, Levi Ackerman, Theo Magath, and the surviving Warriors, he collaborated to stop Eren. He emphasized protecting Azumabito mechanics to operate their flying boat, which he piloted during the pursuit of Eren's Founding Titan.
Onyankopon exhibits a friendly and calm demeanor, building rapport easily with Hange and other Survey Corps members. He maintains a serious mindset, expressing frustration over trivial distractions during critical preparations and praising pragmatic allies. His religious outlook surfaces when explaining his skin color, stating diversity exists because a creator desired an "interesting" world. He values loyalty and justice, openly condemning oppression regardless of the perpetrator.
In the aftermath of the Rumbling, Onyankopon survived the final battle. Three years later, he was shown assisting refugees alongside Levi Ackerman and others. His name derives from "Onyankopon," an Akan sky god from Ghana meaning "Great One," aligning thematically with his role as a pilot.
