Description
Papa, a towering anthropomorphic panda, boasts a rotund, huggable frame and an unwaveringly gentle disposition. His design merges a broad toothy grin, rounded ears, and a stout silhouette, with aesthetic choices later mirrored in Totoro’s creation (*My Neighbor Totoro*), hinting at shared creative lineage. Serving as a steadfast guardian within an unconventional family, he willingly embraces fatherhood for Mimiko, a self-reliant girl, while raising his biological child, the energetic baby panda Panny—a dynamic underscoring his nurturing devotion despite defying conventional parental origins.

Originally zoo inhabitants, Papa and Panny fled captivity to settle in a bamboo grove near Mimiko’s home. Though eventually consenting to daytime zoo returns, he secures nightly freedoms to prioritize familial bonds over enclosure life. Across stories, he springs into action during crises: thwarting a floodgate disaster to save Mimiko and Panny in one tale, then mobilizing to liberate storm-stranded circus animals in another, blending problem-solving grit with his immense strength. His demeanor oscillates between playful warmth and decisive leadership during emergencies.

Animators emphasize his plush physique through squash-and-stretch techniques, contrasting his lumbering motions with Panny’s spryness to highlight their size and age gaps. A soothing, unhurried vocal tone reinforces his serene reliability. His narrative remains anchored in themes of intentional kinship, natural coexistence, and steadfast guardianship, maintaining unwavering consistency across appearances without personal transformation.
