OVA
Description
Hikaru Shidou hails from Tokyo, Japan, born into a family operating a kendo dojo. Her father, the dojo instructor, left on a training journey after she defeated him in a match during kindergarten. Raised alongside three older brothers, Satoru, Masaru, and Kakeru, and her beloved dog Hikari, she developed a tomboyish personality. Standing just 145 cm tall, her short stature frequently causes others to mistake her for an elementary student despite being in junior high. She excels academically in biology but dislikes music class, dedicating her free time to kendo practice and playing with her dog.

During a Tokyo Tower field trip, Hikaru heard Princess Emeraude's summons and found herself transported to Cephiro alongside Umi Ryuuzaki and Fuu Hououji. Master Mage Clef awakened her fire-based magic, revealing their mission: rescue Emeraude from High Priest Zagato to restore Cephiro. Embracing her role as the Magic Knight of Fire, Hikaru readily accepted, unlike her hesitant companions. Her journey involved obtaining weapons forged by Presea, surviving trials in the Forest of Silence, and reviving her Mashin, Rayearth. A critical test forced her to confront an illusion of her dog and protect the brainwashed warrior Lafarga, proving her emotional strength to Rayearth.

The trio ultimately defeated Zagato, only to learn Emeraude summoned them to kill her, as her love for Zagato compromised her role as Pillar and she couldn't end her own life. Despite Emeraude's pleas for death to reunite with Zagato, delivering the fatal blow traumatized Hikaru and her friends. They returned to Earth moments after their initial departure, burdened by guilt.

Afterwards, Hikaru became withdrawn and silent, frequently visiting Tokyo Tower with Umi and Fuu. Her wish to return transported them back to find Cephiro crumbling without a Pillar and under invasion by Autozam, Chizeta, and Fahren. Hikaru apologized to Zagato's brother, Lantis, for killing him; Lantis absolved her, blaming the Pillar System. She formed a bond with Autozam's leader, Eagle Vision, and acknowledged feelings for Lantis, depicted ambiguously toward both in the manga but clarified as love for Lantis in the anime.

Hikaru's trauma manifested in the anime as Nova, a fragment of her soul born from despair over Emeraude's death. Nova defected to Lady Debonair, leading to conflicts where Hikaru reclaimed her sword and reintegrated Nova through acceptance. Creator Mokona revealed Hikaru or Eagle must become the new Pillar. Confronting Eagle, Hikaru refused to fight, demonstrating her conviction that "no one should needlessly die." This act, supported by her friends, solidified her suitability. Upon ascension, she immediately abolished the Pillar system, redistributing the responsibility to uphold Cephiro to all its inhabitants. The series concludes with her gaining the freedom to visit Cephiro at will.

In the OVA, set in an alternate continuity, Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu are already friends attending the same school. A wish upon cherry blossoms reunites them with Mokona, leading to encounters with Clef on Earth. Hikaru receives fire powers and Lexus (Rayearth's renamed form) to battle Cephiro's invaders, including Eagle, who seeks to destroy Earth for his sister Emeraude. After defeating a summoned Zagato's Rune-God, Eagle relents when Emeraude disapproves.

Personality-wise, Hikaru is energetic, honest, and optimistic, often encouraging her friends. Despite her innocence and occasional childishness, she exhibits bravery, combat maturity, and deep loyalty. She communicates with animals, sharing a strong bond with Mokona and Clef's pet Fyula. Her magic includes "Flame Arrow" and "Crimson Lightning," and her Escudo-forged sword ignites when touched by others. Her kendo skills and fiery resolve define her combat style, evolving from enthusiasm to a profound commitment to justice and collective will.
