Description
Freida is the granddaughter of Gustav, the powerful guildmaster of the Ehrenfest Merchant's Guild. She is a young girl who, like the protagonist Myne, was born with a life-threatening condition known as the Devouring, which causes an overabundance of mana that slowly consumes the afflicted person from within. This shared affliction is the most significant factor shaping her background and future. Because of her grandfather’s vast wealth and connections, Freida has been able to survive where most commoner children with the Devouring perish. Gustav secured a contract for her with a minor noble named Henrik, who provides her with a special magic tool in the shape of a bracelet. This tool drains her excess mana, keeping her alive. In exchange for this continued survival, Freida is expected to become Henrik’s mistress when she comes of age at fifteen and move to the Noble’s Quarter.

In terms of appearance, Freida is a very cute girl with light, rose-colored hair that is described as fluffy and soft-looking, as well as brown eyes. Due to the stunting effects of the Devouring, she is quite small for her age, though she eventually grows to a more typical size as the story progresses. Her outward demeanor is mature, dignified, and formal, largely a result of the rigorous etiquette training she undergoes to prepare for her future life among nobles. However, this polished exterior conceals a sharp and ambitious merchant’s mind. Inwardly, she is sly, cunning, and possesses a keen nose for profit, often seeing business opportunities that others overlook. When money or a deal is at stake, she can become surprisingly aggressive and straightforward, temporarily forgetting her demure and polite facade.

Freida’s primary motivation is survival, but unlike Myne, she is willing to accept the path of becoming a noble’s mistress as the price for living. Her ultimate goal is to use the security and connections this arrangement provides to fulfill her true passion: operating her own successful store in the Noble’s Quarter. This ambition reflects a deep-seated love for commerce; her hobbies include counting, saving, and simply looking at her money, a devotion to profit that others have noted rivals Myne’s obsession with books. In the story, Freida serves as a critical foil to Myne, presenting the logical and socially accepted solution to the Devouring. She is the one who explains the harsh reality of their condition and the choices available, trying to persuade Myne to accept a similar contract. Her role evolves from a potential rival for Myne’s innovative product ideas into a key business partner and an important link between the commoner merchants and the noble society.

One of the most significant relationships in Freida’s life is with Myne. Freida views Myne as her first and best friend, feeling a unique kinship with someone who shares her illness and her unusual, single-minded devotion to a passion—Myne with books, and Freida herself with money and business. She desires to spend time with Myne and is proactive in arranging opportunities for them to be together, such as hosting taste-testing events for new foods like pound cake. Her friendship is demonstrated through action, as she is willing to use her precious, life-sustaining magic tool to help Myne when she collapses from the Devouring. On the business side, Freida has a hostile and competitive rivalry with Benno, the head of the Gilberta Company, as both constantly try to outmaneuver the other to secure exclusive rights to Myne’s lucrative new recipes and products. Her relationship with her grandfather Gustav is one of mutual understanding; while he is a doting grandfather who will do anything for her, Freida pragmatically views his immense investment in her survival as a business venture in her future success as a merchant.

Throughout the narrative, Freida undergoes notable development, primarily in her expanding role and partnership with Myne. After Myne survives the Devouring by becoming the adopted daughter of the lord and is reborn as the noble Rozemyne, Freida uses her own cleverness to discover this secret. Rather than losing their connection, this allows their relationship to deepen into a formal business partnership. Freida becomes a co-owner and co-investor in an Italian restaurant opened in the Noble’s Quarter. This marks the fulfillment of her long-held dream to operate a store among the nobility, establishing her as a key leader among commoner merchants who is trusted to carry out Rozemyne’s will, gather intelligence, and coordinate efforts in the lower city. Her notable abilities lie entirely in the realm of commerce. She is an exceptionally skilled businesswoman with a natural talent for organization, negotiation, and recognizing profitable ventures, such as when she instantly grasps the value of a new food recipe. This acumen, combined with her formal training and family connections, makes her a formidable merchant despite her young age.
