Description
Azusa Noyama, nicknamed Azuki after a childhood incident where classmate Ken Takayanagi misread her name in first grade, initially disliked the nickname intensely. This changed in fifth grade when transfer student Yūnosuke Ogasawara expressed fondness for it upon hearing it, sparking Azuki's immediate romantic feelings and leading her to embrace the name.
Azuki lives in an apartment with her mother Keiko, father Tadashi, and younger brother Daizu. Her father Tadashi demonstrates diverse skills including voice mimicry, electrical repair, and cooking, once earning university respect for assisting absent students during roll calls. Her mother Keiko exhibits extreme compliance, unable to refuse requests like storing neighborhood bazaar items. Daizu serves as an annoying younger sibling who often spies on Azuki and creates discomfort; he develops romantic interests, including a girlfriend who temporarily pursues Yūnosuke. Azuki's grandfather, Gōzō, a former police officer, impersonates active duty to entertain Daizu and initially resists but later accepts Azuki's relationship with Yūnosuke after reflection influenced by his late wife's memory.
Azuki maintains three close friends: Kaoru Nishino, Midori Kodama (nicknamed Jidama), and Tomomi Takahashi (called Tomo). Sensitive Kaoru, with blonde hair, harbors a secret crush on Ken and often cries due to emotional vulnerability; she lives with her salon-owner mother near Azuki. Tomboy Jidama dislikes dresses except formal kimono, prefers overalls, lives with her grandmother, exhibits a strong personality, and temporarily ran away after a disagreement. Jidama's mother, Aoi, works as a nurse facing dilemmas balancing work and childcare. Tomo, class president with glasses and a bob haircut, harbors feelings for Makoto Sakaguchi, Yūnosuke's wealthy but unspoiled friend, and eventually dates him. The four girls form a "Club of Unreturned Love" to navigate their romantic challenges.
Azuki's primary arc revolves around her affection for Yūnosuke. She becomes jealous when he interacts with other girls, particularly rival Yōko Sakakibara, who actively tries to undermine their connection. They share their first kiss after older students bully Yūnosuke, initially misunderstanding the consequences and fearing pregnancy. They maintain a shared diary as communication and emotional bond. Azuki experiences intense jealousy toward a new music teacher later but moves past it.
Her personality blends dreaminess with moments of deductive problem-solving, like locating Ken after he hid during a game. She wears girlish pigtails and coveralls, exhibits anxiety when separated from Yūnosuke during vacations, and frequently engages in inner monologues about her feelings.
Beyond elementary school, the manga extends Azuki's story: at age 20, she marries Yūnosuke, and they later have fraternal twins. Kaoru marries Ken.
