Description
Professor Hojo, born in 1945, rose to lead Shinra's Research and Development division after Professor Gast's resignation. His career began as Gast's assistant, jointly pioneering mako energy studies at Shinra Manor near Nibelheim. Their collaboration resulted in the 1977 discovery of extraterrestrial remains at the North Crater, misidentified as a Cetra and renamed Jenova. Hojo then co-initiated the Jenova Project alongside Gast, Lucrecia Crescent, Hollander, and Gillian Hewley.

He directed Jenova Project S against Hollander's Project G. Hojo married Lucrecia Crescent but used her as a test subject, injecting Jenova cells into their unborn child to create Sephiroth, born between 1977 and 1982. He concealed his paternity; Sephiroth later called him "a walking mass of complexes." After Gast's 1980 departure, Hojo took over Shinra's research division, escalating his feud with Hollander. He established a research facility beneath Shinra Manor, conducting brutal experiments: shooting Vincent Valentine in 1984, infusing him with Chaos for immortality, and sealing him in a coffin. In 1985, Hojo murdered Gast at Icicle Inn and captured the last Cetra, Ifalna, and her daughter Aerith for imprisonment and research.

During the Wutai War and Avalanche insurgency, Hojo pursued opportunities relentlessly. He accompanied Avalanche leader Fuhito to examine his Ravens and observe the Zirconiade materia in Elfe. After Sephiroth destroyed Nibelheim in October 0002, Hojo managed cleanup operations. Discovering survivors Zack Fair and Cloud Strife, he devised Reunion Theory experiments, ordering their capture for Sephiroth-cell injections and mako infusion. Successful subjects received numerical tattoos; failures were discarded. Zack resisted due to SOLDIER enhancements, while Cloud succumbed to mako poisoning and catatonia. Hojo confined both beneath Shinra Manor for four years until their escape. In 0006, he approved capturing Red XIII from Cosmo Canyon, designating him test subject "Red XIII."

Throughout the Jenova War, Hojo prioritized scientific validation over ethics. He proposed breeding Aerith with Red XIII or a SOLDIER candidate to yield long-lived test subjects. Vacationing in Costa del Sol, he taunted Cloud about sensing Sephiroth's call. At the North Crater, Hojo observed Cloud's mental collapse with detached fascination, confirming his Reunion Theory. He later sabotaged the Sister Ray cannon, overloading Midgar's reactors to channel mako energy to Sephiroth while ignoring the city's destruction risk. During this period, Hojo injected himself with Jenova cells to strengthen his body for Omega summoning, hastening his mental decline.

Self-experimentation caused grotesque mutations in his final battle with Cloud's party, transforming him into Helletic Hojo and Lifeform-Hojo N before defeat. One week post-mortem, his neurological data uploaded to the Worldwide Network via a fragment program. Three years later, this digital consciousness seized Weiss the Immaculate's mind during the Deepground War, commanding the Tsviets to activate Omega for planetary energy harvesting. Post-mortem encounters showed Hojo in a corrupted Lifestream, willingly absorbed by Sephiroth after declaring all life would merge with Jenova.

In *Last Order: Final Fantasy VII*, Hojo appears after the Nibelheim Incident. He arrives at the mako reactor following Sephiroth's defeat, orders Turks to transport Zack to Shinra Manor's basement, and identifies Cloud as a viable test specimen—consistent with his pattern of exploiting disasters for research while treating lives as expendable.
