TV-Series
Description
Mina Hibino attends the same middle school class as Takagi and Nishikata. She forms a close-knit trio with friends Yukari Tenkawa and Sanae Tsukimoto, frequently seen together in school and beyond. Her appearance features long brown hair usually tied back, short bangs, and distinctively thick eyebrows, noted as a family trait. She stands noticeably shorter than her peers, lending her a younger look.
Energetic, cheerful, and optimistic, Mina often sparks playful activities with a boisterous spirit, sometimes prompting her friends to pinch her cheeks or scold her lightly. She shows little interest in romance, focusing instead on practical concerns like food and household chores. Coming from a large family, she assists with farm work and domestic duties, making her a skilled cook. Academically, she struggles, often neglecting homework and borrowing Yukari's notes, leading to occasional tension. Despite needing significant sleep, she rises early for family responsibilities. Attempts to appear mature, such as drinking coffee, are frequently undermined by her inherently childish behavior.
Her background includes a younger sister and brother, a pet dog, and a cousin, Haruka Hibino, featured in another manga by creator Sōichirō Yamamoto. Mina possesses a sensitive tongue and avoids carbonated drinks, a trait continuing into adulthood. She also retains a belief in Santa Claus well into her teens.
Approximately ten years later, in the spin-off series, Mina works as a kindergarten teacher, instructing Chi, Takagi and Nishikata's daughter. This role brings her into regular contact with Takagi during school pick-ups. She has married and has three children, though her husband remains unnamed. Her adult personality stays cheerful and kind, though motherhood and teaching add layers of responsibility and occasional strictness; her friends still perceive her as easygoing. She maintains her close bonds with Yukari and Sanae, continuing their dynamic of playful teasing and support – such as tailing Takagi's family together and Mina comforting Yukari before her wedding. As an adult, her hair is slightly longer, often braided, and she favors simpler clothing like sweaters and work aprons, though she remains the shortest in her group.
In the film depicting the characters' final summer of junior high, Mina joins Yukari and Sanae for summer vacation activities. She compiles a list of 100 things for the trio to accomplish before Sanae might leave for high school. Later, at a festival, she expresses relief when Sanae chooses to stay on the island for school. A post-credits scene shows adult Mina participating in a traditional "mushi okuri" event alongside Takagi, Nishikata, and their daughter.
