Description
A man from Omaha, Nebraska worked as a circus magician until a hot air balloon accident transported him to the Land of Oz. Upon arrival, he adopted the identity of a mighty wizard to maintain order and prevent the Wicked Witches from dominating the realm. Establishing himself in the Emerald City, he ruled through elaborate illusions and mechanical tricks designed to appear supernatural.
To visitors, he projected multiple terrifying forms: a giant head to Dorothy, a beautiful fairy woman to the Scarecrow, a monstrous beast to the Tin Woodman, and a flaming orb to the Cowardly Lion, reinforcing his image as all-powerful. His reign ended when Dorothy Gale and her companions exposed him; her dog Toto revealed him operating machinery behind a curtain.
Exposed as an ordinary man, he confessed his origins and explained his arrival. He agreed to help Dorothy return to Kansas using his repaired balloon and appointed the Scarecrow as the Emerald City's new ruler before departure. However, the balloon launched accidentally without Dorothy when Toto ran away, leaving him stranded alone in the skies; his ultimate fate from this journey was initially unknown.
He later reemerged in Kansas, working as a performer in a circus. Dorothy encountered him there after her second return from Oz. He acknowledged their shared history privately but advised against public discussion of Oz due to societal disbelief, confirming his permanent return to the human world and inability to revisit Oz.
Throughout his Oz governance, he demonstrated resourcefulness in maintaining authority through deception but ultimately prioritized helping Dorothy once his limitations were revealed. His story concluded without further magical development or influence on later Oz events, as subsequent storylines centered on other characters.
