Description
Ittan Momen manifests as a yōkai taking the form of a long strip of white cotton cloth, typically around 10 meters long, with depictions varying across media. He possesses thin, pointy eyes lacking discernible pupils and has no visible mouth, though he consumes food and drink. His cloth body tapers toward the tail end. While his design shows slight evolution in different anime adaptations—gaining creases, color variations, or subtle limb details—he consistently retains the core cloth-like appearance. Manga lore notes a hardened bone at the leading edge of his head.

Debuting in the 1966 manga story *The Great Yōkai War* and its 1968 anime adaptation, he initially died battling the Witch, who pierced his heart with a poison needle. He later reappeared without explanation in subsequent stories, becoming a recurring figure. As a member of the Kitarō Family and one of the 47 Yōkai Warriors, his primary role involves aerial transportation for Kitarō and allies. His flight ability enables carrying multiple passengers, though excessive weight or distance causes exhaustion. Beyond transport, he is a competent fighter described as a "war hawk" for favoring combat over negotiation. He employs constriction tactics in battle and has led troops under Medama-Oyaji’s command. His cotton composition renders him vulnerable to scissors, fire, and water; injuries necessitate sewing repairs. Rain saps his strength, requiring manual drying, and he avoids washers and dryers due to discomfort with tumbling and hot air.

His personality varies significantly by anime adaptation:
- Early anime (1960s–1970s): Spoke infrequently, primarily appearing as silent support.
- 1985 anime: Became talkative and facetious, using a Hakata dialect for comedic interactions with Nezumi-Otoko. This version hinted at cowardice, like fearing electrical shocks, and implied female counterparts.
- 1996 anime: Used a Kyushu dialect; frequently constricted Nezumi-Otoko as punishment, showed attraction to beautiful kimonos, and developed a dislike for flies.
- 2007 anime: Emphasized cleanliness and a pronounced fear of water. Bonded with a young girl who aided his recovery when wet. Expressed dislike for children, though exceptions occurred. Representing Kagoshima in the 47 Yōkai Warriors, his mark was near his tail. He also enjoyed reading.
- 2018 anime: Highlighted his fondness for praising beautiful women and using cloth-related puns, a trait he confirmed when questioned.

Outside the core series, he appeared in films like *The Great Yōkai War* (2005) and spin-offs such as *Yōkai Rally* episodes, serving roles like a relay vehicle or cameraman transport. Video game adaptations feature him in flying mechanics or combat assists. Live-action appearances include brief roles in *The Great Yōkai War: Guardians* side stories.

Trivia notes list his favorite foods as chocolate and sweet potato shochu, occasional red coloration, and Kagoshima dialect origins stemming from voice actor influences. His lore connects to regional Kagoshima folklore where similar cloth yōkai suffocate victims, though his character is largely benevolent.
