Description
Bill, a black youth in 1838 Pennsylvania, is a close childhood friend of Jeanie MacDowell and Stephen Foster. Together they form a musical trio: Bill plays banjo, Jeanie sings, and Stephen plays harmonica. His father, Big Joe, works for the MacDowell family, defining their socioeconomic relationship. Bill faces recurring racial discrimination, a significant challenge in his life.

Following the death of Jeanie's mother, Bill leaves his hometown alongside Jeanie and Stephen to pursue his dream of becoming a professional musician. His journey involves confronting pervasive racism and prejudice during their travels, with Jeanie and Stephen actively defending him against discriminatory treatment. These experiences contribute to his character development, showcasing his resilience in overcoming societal barriers while maintaining dedication to both music and friendship.

Beyond the trio's core interactions, Bill is occasionally seen with his dog Tray, who assists the group in perilous situations. The narrative portrays his growth as he strives for musical success despite the racial inequalities of 19th-century America.
