OVA
Description
Takeshi, sometimes called Tadashi, is a young man fond of scuba diving and in a relationship with Kaori. His uncle, Doctor Koyanagi, is an inventor.
While vacationing in Okinawa, Takeshi and Kaori discover a bizarre fish with mechanical legs. Kaori, possessing a highly sensitive sense of smell, is intensely disturbed by its odor. Takeshi tries to contain the creature in a bag, but it escapes. As more walking fish emerge from the ocean and invade the land, the pair returns to Tokyo and brings a captured specimen to Doctor Koyanagi. During examination, the mechanical legs attach to Koyanagi’s arm, forcing him to amputate it to stop an infection. He reveals the walking machines stem from World War II-era Japanese military research involving a virus that emits a deadly stench, originally designed as a biological weapon.
Kaori becomes infected and begins emitting the foul odor. In despair, she attempts suicide. Takeshi brings her to Koyanagi for aid, only to find the doctor has placed her into a custom walking machine. When activated, the machine causes Kaori to mortally wound Koyanagi before she flees.
Later, Takeshi is attacked by an infected giant squid and falls into a canal, where he is injured by small walking fish. He loses consciousness and awakens a month later to find Tokyo overrun by walking machines now carrying infected humans. He learns Kaori has been placed in a custom machine by Koyanagi. Takeshi encounters a circus using infected humans in performances and eventually locates Kaori among them. He retrieves her and returns to Koyanagi’s lab, meeting the doctor’s assistant, Ms. Yoshiyama, who informs him Koyanagi has died from his wounds.
A mutated Koyanagi, now fused to a flying walking machine, appears and kidnaps Ms. Yoshiyama. In the chaos, an jealous Kaori attacks the assistant, and Takeshi becomes separated from her. He continues his search and meets a group of biology students from Kyoto University who are immune to the virus. They explain the virus is constructing walking machines from iron-rich shipwrecks and that they are developing a vaccine. Takeshi joins their effort to save humanity. During his search, he discovers the burnt remains of Kaori, noting she is finally free of the stench.
In the OVA adaptation, Takeshi becomes infected instead of Kaori. Doctor Koyanagi attaches him to a custom walking machine, which turns on Koyanagi and kills him before escaping. Kaori becomes the main protagonist, searching for the infected Takeshi.
