Description
Kikyou is a central figure in InuYasha: The Final Act, a powerful priestess whose tragic circumstances place her at the heart of the conflict with the demon Naraku. Her story begins decades before the events of the series, where, in her original life, she was the guardian of the Shikon Jewel, a sacred treasure of immense power. This duty isolated her, forcing her to live a life of constant vigilance and sacrifice, unable to pursue the simple, ordinary existence she secretly yearned for. Her deep love for the half-demon Inuyasha offered a path to that normal life, but their relationship was destroyed by the machinations of Naraku, leading her to die of a fatal wound after sealing Inuyasha to a tree with a sacred arrow.

Her existence in The Final Act is a complex one, as she was resurrected long after her death by a witch who used her remains and a fragment of the soul now reincarnated in the modern schoolgirl Kagome. This new body is sustained by artificial means, requiring wandering spirit collectors to bring her the souls of the deceased to maintain her animation. Upon her return, Kikyou is initially fueled by a deep resentment and bitterness toward the fate that separated her from Inuyasha and toward Kagome, who not only possesses her reincarnated soul but also travels by Inuyasha's side. However, she quickly learns the truth of Naraku's betrayal and her motivations evolve beyond personal vengeance.

Kikyou's primary motivation throughout The Final Act is a singular, unwavering commitment to destroy Naraku and purify the corrupted Shikon Jewel, even at the cost of her own precarious existence. She operates largely as a lone agent, driven by a profound sense of duty that was instilled in her as a priestess. Her role in the story is that of a tragic, quasi-antagonistic ally. While she fights for the same ultimate goal as Inuyasha and his group, her methods are secretive and her path often separates her from them. She is neither fully alive nor fully dead, which grants her a unique perspective but also a profound loneliness. Her final plan involves forcing Naraku to complete the jewel so she can use her spiritual powers to purify both him and it simultaneously, a mission she pursues with quiet resolve and considerable personal sacrifice.

Her key relationships define her journey. Her bond with Inuyasha is one of tragic love, filled with unresolved sorrow, longing, and a painful awareness that time has moved on without her. She remains deeply connected to him, but accepts that his future lies with Kagome. Her relationship with Kagome is incredibly complex; initially viewing her as a rival who has taken her soul and her love, Kikyou gradually comes to see Kagome as her own person and an ally. In a crucial moment during The Final Act, Kikyou orchestrates a trial on Mount Azusa for Kagome, forcing her to confront her own jealousy and insecurity to ultimately prove her pure-hearted desire to save Kikyou's life. Her relationship with her younger sister, Kaede, who has aged into a village priestess, is touched with sorrow for the years they lost. She also acts as a protector to the young slayer Kohaku, seeing in him a kindred spirit burdened by a tainted existence.

Throughout The Final Act, Kikyou undergoes significant development, shedding the resentment of her initial resurrection and fully embracing her original compassionate nature. She moves from a figure of bitterness to one of selfless sacrifice. In her final confrontation, she absorbs Naraku's miasma to heal her allies and eventually allows herself to be purified by Kagome's arrow, using her own body as a vessel to purify the Shikon Jewel and launch a last, desperate attack on Naraku. Her death is peaceful, as she finally achieves the normal, human existence she always wanted in her final moments, dissolving into light in Inuyasha's arms.

Kikyou possesses extraordinary abilities as a priestess, making her one of the most spiritually powerful characters in the series. She is a master archer; her sacred arrows are imbued with potent purification energy that can destroy demons, break barriers, and seal beings away. She can create powerful barriers for protection, exorcise evil spirits, and heal others, though doing so often taxes her own fragile body. Her unique undead state allows her to command the soul collectors and create shikigami, which are magical familiars she can use to communicate or act on her behalf. Even with only a fraction of her original soul, her spiritual power remains immense, capable of harming powerful demons like Naraku and enacting a plan for purification that nearly succeeds in destroying him for good.
