Description
Candice "Candy" White was abandoned as an infant near Pony's Home orphanage in Michigan during a May 7, 1898 snowfall, identified only by a doll bearing the name "Candy." Sister Lane, the orphanage caretaker, named her Candice White. Raised alongside other orphans, including her closest friend Annie, young Candy displayed a spirited, protective, and occasionally mischievous nature—defending Annie from bullies or sabotaging her own adoption chance to remain with her friend. At age six (ten in the anime), after Annie's adoption, a teenage boy in Scottish attire playing bagpipes on Pony's Hill comforted Candy. He remarked she looked "prettier when she smiled" and left behind a badge with the Ardley family crest. She forever idealized this encounter as her "Prince on the Hill," a lifelong emotional touchstone.

Adopted at twelve by the wealthy Leagan family as a companion for their daughter Eliza, Candy endured persistent mistreatment from Eliza and her brother Neil, who relegated her to servant status. During this time, she met Anthony Brown, whose resemblance to her "Prince" sparked her first romantic attachment, and befriended the Cornwell brothers, Alistair and Archibald. Falsely accused of theft by the Leagans, she fled and was rescued from a near-fatal boat accident by Albert, a bearded recluse living with animals. His profound kindness left a lasting impression, though his identity remained unknown. Subsequently adopted by the reclusive patriarch "Uncle William" of the Ardley family (his true identity undisclosed), Candy faced tragedy when Anthony died shortly after in a horse-riding accident. Devastated, she returned to Pony's Home.

Sent to London's St. Paul's College, Candy met Terrence "Terry" Granchester, an aspiring actor and illegitimate son of a British duke. Their bond deepened into a passionate romance, but Eliza engineered a scandal causing Terry's departure. Candy left school to train as a nurse in Chicago during World War I, hoping to reunite with Terry and Albert. Working at St. Joanna Hospital, she encountered Albert again, now amnesiac due to a wartime train explosion in Italy. She cared for him in her apartment, fostering a deep platonic reliance. Meanwhile, Terry pursued acting in New York but faced a moral crisis when actress Susanna Marlowe sacrificed her leg to save him. Susanna's subsequent suicide attempt and her mother's blackmail compelled Terry to choose between Candy and duty. Recognizing his conflicted feelings for Susanna, Candy sacrificed their relationship to ensure his commitment to her.

After Terry's departure, Albert vanished once more, leaving Candy distraught. She later discovered Neil Leagan had orchestrated a forced engagement under orders from "Uncle William." Albert reappeared, revealing himself as both Uncle William—her legal guardian—and the "Prince on the Hill." He annulled the engagement and confirmed his dual identity, culminating in their emotional reunion at Pony's Hill.

Physically, Candy is petite (5'1", 99 lbs) with fair skin, freckles, green eyes, and curly blonde hair typically worn in pigtails. She exhibits a tomboyish, energetic demeanor—climbing trees, lassoing, and horseback riding—balanced by compassion and resilience. Her optimism persists through bullying, loss, and heartbreak. She forges deep connections, charms adversaries, and maintains selflessness, evident in her nursing career and personal sacrifices. Her development traces a journey from an impulsive orphan to a wise, forgiving woman, tempered by adversity yet retaining her core spiritedness and idealism.
