Description
Rena Ryugu, originally named Reina, was born in Hinamizawa but relocated to Ibaraki with her parents due to her mother Reiko’s career. There, Reiko began an affair with coworker Akihito. When Reiko revealed her pregnancy and intent to leave Rena’s father, Rena refused to join the new family. Her rejection precipitated a violent outburst: she assaulted three male classmates with a baseball bat, shattered school windows, and faced hospitalization and expulsion. Convinced Oyashiro-sama cursed her for abandoning Hinamizawa and blaming herself for the family’s collapse, she adopted "Rena" to discard "icky things" from her past—later acknowledging this also erased "incredible things."
Returning to Hinamizawa with her father, Rena befriended Keiichi Maebara, Mion Sonozaki, Satoko Hojo, and Rika Furude. She obsessively collects "cute" items (*kāii*), frequently scavenging the local junkyard. Upon encountering adorable objects or people, she enters "Take Home Mode" (*Omochikaerī*), exclaiming "I want to take it home!" (*はぅ〜! お持ち帰りぃ〜!*) while displaying heightened agility. Her speech features tics like "*kana? kana??*" ("I wonder?") and "*haū*" when excited. Superficially cheerful, she harbors trauma-fueled hostility toward lies, screaming "*Uso da!*" ("You're lying!") when detecting deception. She maintains a secret refuge in an abandoned junkyard van.
Acutely perceptive, Rena deduces situations from minor clues and constructs detailed crime hypotheses. Under Hinamizawa Syndrome—a parasitic infection inducing paranoia and hallucinations—she grows violently unstable. Symptoms include phantom footsteps, a woman’s apology, and sensing Oyashiro-sama. In *Tsumihoroboshi-hen*, after receiving notes from Miyo Takano, she killed scam artist Rina Mamiya in self-defense and murdered Teppei Hojo to protect her father. Escalating, she took her school hostage, intending to detonate a rooftop firebomb to expose an alien conspiracy. She severely injured Mion during this incident but expressed remorse after Keiichi intervened.
In the OVA *Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku: Outbreak*, Hinamizawa is quarantined during a viral outbreak. Rena collaborates with Keiichi to survive village-wide chaos, combating infected villagers and external forces through strategic escape plans and confrontations, though specific events remain ambiguous.
Physically, Rena has reddish-orange or brown hair, blue or lavender eyes, and stands 159–161 cm tall. Her school attire is a sailor uniform with a yellow tie; casual wear includes a white dress with purple ribbons, black thigh-high socks, brown boots, and a signature white cap. As an adult, she wears a purple business suit with longer hair.
