OVA
Description
Rena Ryugu, originally Reina Ryugu, endured profound childhood trauma in Ibaraki after her parents' divorce, triggering severe mental health struggles. She suffered delusions of maggots infesting her blood and believed the deity Oyashiro-sama punished her for leaving Hinamizawa. These culminated in a violent outburst where she attacked three male classmates with a baseball bat, permanently injuring one and shattering her school’s windows. Fan theories propose the assault was provoked by an attempted sexual assault, though primary sources lack explicit confirmation. Hospitalized afterward, she insisted Oyashiro-sama commanded her return to Hinamizawa for survival.

Relocating with her father, she renamed herself Rena—symbolically removing "i" to discard "icky things" from her life, though she later admitted this also erased "incredible things." Her mental state stabilized, yet she developed obsessive fixations, particularly an extreme "Cute Mode" toward objects or people deemed "kyute." This state amplified her physical abilities, driving uncontrollable urges to take them home ("Omochikaeri"). She frequented the local junkyard for "treasure hunting," curating a secret base inside a wrecked van for refuge during distress.

Rena exhibited a complex duality: typically cheerful, friendly, and caring—especially toward classmate Keiichi Maebara, whom she supported amid hints of romantic tension—she shifted dramatically when confronting lies or challenges to her belief in Oyashiro-sama. Her eyes then lost animation, revealing hostility or violence. She possessed sharp perceptiveness, deducing crimes or emotional states from minor clues. Her fierce loyalty manifested in Tsumihoroboshi-hen when she killed scam artists Rina Mamiya and Teppei Hojo to protect her father. Succumbing to Hinamizawa Syndrome, she took classmates hostage at school before Keiichi intervened.

In later timelines following Takano Miyo's defeat, Rena attended Gogura University with Keiichi and Mion Sonozaki by 1988. As an adult in Rei’s 2019 setting, she had a son named Kihiro and wore a purple business suit with longer hair, retaining her distinctive style. Her portrayal in the OVA *Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira* remains unspecified.
