Kitarō, a yōkai and final descendant of the Ghost Tribe, dedicates his existence to preserving harmony between humans and supernatural forces. Born posthumously in a graveyard and emerging from his mother’s grave, he is guided by his father, Medama-Oyaji—a sentient eyeball—who mentors him in mediating conflicts. Tasked with shielding humanity from hostile yōkai while advocating mutual respect, Kitarō balances guardianship with diplomacy. In *Yo-kai Watch Shadowside: Oni-ō no Fukkatsu*, he allies with Natsume Amano and Akinori Arihoshi to counter the Onimaro virus, which transforms humans into destructive vessels. When antagonists manipulate Touma Tsukinami, a boy infected by the virus, Kitarō employs his abilities to sever the corruption’s hold. His arsenal includes razor-sharp hair needles, a reinforced chanchanko jacket that subdues adversaries, and mystic sandals enhancing his combat agility. Kitarō’s pragmatic compassion surfaces during encounters with allies and foes. After Natsume and Akinori misidentify other yōkai as him, he dispels the confusion and rebukes Nezumi-Otoko, a deceitful rodent yōkai, for impersonation. By enabling Natsume to access Touma’s memories, he catalyzes the Onimaro threat’s neutralization. Though instrumental, he insists humans must drive their own salvation, embodying his belief in coexistence through shared responsibility. His bonds with Medama-Oyaji, Neko-Musume—a fiercely loyal cat yōkai—and companions like Sunakake-Babaa and Konaki-Jijii position him as a unifying force among yōkai. Visually, he retains his iconic striped chanchanko and obscured left eye, consistent with his lore. The film weaves his legacy into a new narrative framework, honoring his established persona as a guardian who intervenes only when essential. After ensuring the protagonists’ path to victory, he withdraws, reaffirming his role as a bridge between worlds who empowers others to forge their resolutions.
