Description
Sadao Maō, originally Satan Jacob, emerged from a low-class goblin tribe within the Demon Realm of Ente Isla. He strategically united warring demon factions, rising to become the Demon King. His invasion of Ente Isla sought vital resources for demons facing starvation. However, misinterpretations by his subordinates led to widespread destruction and human casualties, particularly on the Western and Southern Continents, cementing his feared reputation despite his intent to avoid unnecessary bloodshed and accept surrenders.
Following defeat by the hero Emilia Justina, he retreated through a dimensional gate to modern-day Tokyo, Japan. Stripped of magic on Earth, he and his general Alciel adopted human forms and identities—Sadao Maō and Shirō Ashiya. Using hypnosis to forge residency records, they settled in the dilapidated Villa Rosa Sasazuka apartment. Maō secured employment at MgRonald's, progressing from part-time worker to assistant shift manager and then shift manager. His commitment to human work ethics and capitalist systems shifted his ambitions; he aimed to climb the corporate ladder, planning to apply Earth's economic models to peacefully reform the Demon Realm.
Physically, his demon form stands over three meters tall, featuring red eyes, spiky black hair, horns, bat-like wings, and goat-like legs. In human form, he appears as an average Japanese man (173 cm tall) with red eyes and black hair, typically dressed in budget clothing or his MgRonald's uniform. Regaining magic temporarily reverts his physique to its demonic state, frequently damaging his clothes.
His personality evolved significantly on Earth. Once a resolute but misunderstood ruler, he became diligent, empathetic, and community-oriented. He assisted colleagues like Chiho Sasaki at work, protected civilians during crises, and shielded former enemies like Lucifer. Despite initial hostility, he developed a complex relationship with Emilia (now Emi Yusa), cooperating to address threats from Ente Isla. He expressed regret for past actions, acknowledging his failure to understand humans during his conquest.
Key developments include adopting Alas Ramus, a fragment of the Sephirot Yesod, whom he and Emi co-parented. He later fused with Acieth Alla, another Yesod fragment, to rescue Emi and Ashiya from angels, gaining enhanced abilities without full transformation. His powers—demonic energy fueled by negative emotions—granted superhuman strength, speed, and teleportation. He often expended accumulated magic to repair collateral damage, delaying his return to Ente Isla.
Romantically, Chiho Sasaki's affections confused him, though he eventually reciprocated, becoming engaged to her. His bond with Emi also deepened through shared responsibilities and mutual protection. In later events, after transferring his powers to Emi to stabilize Ente Isla's magic, he fully embraced human life as Sadao Maō, opening a café and relinquishing his demonic legacy.
