Description
Itsuki Myōdōin is a second-year student and president of the student council at Myōdō Academy, where her grandfather serves as principal. Compelled by family expectations to act as temporary heir to the Myōdōin martial arts dojo in place of her ill older brother Satsuki, she publicly presents a boyish image through cross-dressing and masculine mannerisms. Privately, however, she conceals a deep affection for cute, traditionally feminine items like fashion and toys, believing such interests conflict with the strength and discipline demanded by her family legacy.
Her secret is discovered by fellow students Tsubomi Hanasaki and Erika Kurumi. After Tsubomi initially develops a crush on her mistaken male identity, the revelation of Itsuki's gender creates emotional turmoil. Targeted later by the Desert Apostle Cobraja, the internal conflict between her suppressed femininity and imposed masculine role causes her Heart Flower to wilt, creating a Desertrian from a bronze statue. Following purification by Cure Blossom, Tsubomi and Erika encourage her to embrace her interests by joining the Fashion Club. With their support, Itsuki gradually integrates her feminine side, designing and wearing feminine clothing while continuing her duties as student council president and martial artist.
In a pivotal moment, Itsuki discovers the fairy Potpourri, recognizing it as "cute." This encounter allows her to transform into Cure Sunshine to rescue Tsubomi and Erika and protect Satsuki's Heart Flower. As Cure Sunshine, she identifies as "the flower bathing in the sunlight," drawing power from the sun with the sunflower as her theme flower. Her transformation features extremely long blonde hair in twin tails adorned with orange bows, gold flower-shaped earrings, and a two-piece cream-and-gold outfit with a large chest bow and petal-like skirt details. Her signature attack, "Sunshine Flash," involves drawing a circle of light to target enemies, declared with the catchphrase: "I will heal the darkness in your heart with my light!"
Itsuki travels to Paris with the other Cures for a fashion show in the movie "Fashion Show in the Flower Capital... Really?!" They confront the Desert Apostle Count Salamander and assist a boy named Loup Garou. During this adventure, Itsuki wears a pale beige turtleneck layered under a gold-striped top, paired with a dark brown jacket, denim pants, and black dress shoes.
The spin-off "HeartCatch Pretty Cure!☆Reborn" features Itsuki appearing with amnesia, initially existing as a voice in the mind of Myōdōin Hinata. She later meets Hinata and learns they are non-biological twin sisters. After Potpourri shields her from a Desertrian attack, Itsuki regains her memories. She temporarily re-transforms into Cure Sunshine using a Shiny Perfume, though her powers are limited to five minutes and auxiliary attacks like Sunshine Flash due to the presence of Cure Sunburst.
Key relationships define her journey: her protective bond with Satsuki, motivating her initial cross-dressing and later resolve as Cure Sunshine; her partnership with Potpourri, forged over a shared desire to protect others; her supportive friendships with Tsubomi and Erika, crucial to her self-acceptance; and her eventual closeness with Yuri Tsukikage (Cure Moonlight), despite initial distance.
The name "Myōdōin" incorporates "bright/light" (明) and "magnificent school" (堂院), reflecting her sunlight-based powers and connection to Myōdō Academy. "Itsuki" (いつき), written in hiragana, is contextually associated with "timber trees" (樹), aligning with the series' floral themes.
