Description
Originally a successful actor from East Germany, Hydra abandoned his career to join the American criminal underworld, exploiting his mastery of disguise to become a lethal assassin. Cold, uncaring, and extreme, he already viewed himself as superior to most humans. This mindset made him readily accept a Decepticon offer for greater power. Bonding with a Transtector from the G Nebula granted him Godmaster status and the ability to manipulate Chōkon Power, specifically controlling lightning. He operates alongside his younger brother, Buster; their Transtectors can merge into the giant jet Darkwings. Hydra genuinely believes the Decepticons are destined to rule humanity and willingly sacrifices his humanity for that cause.

Tasked with finding other Godmasters before the Autobots, Hydra and Buster searched North America. They targeted Ginrai, driver of a seemingly indestructible truck. Attempting to seize the vehicle, they were forced to retreat when Ginrai merged with his truck Transtector, revealing himself as a Godmaster. Resuming their pursuit, they attacked multiple tractor trailers, ruthlessly eliminating several of Ginrai's trucker friends before locating him again. Hydra engaged Ginrai one-on-one but retreated when sunlight reflected off a picture Ginrai carried, blinding him temporarily.

The brothers fought the Autobots in numerous battles. They rescued the captured Decepticon Cancer, destroying a homing beacon planted on him, and attacked the Autobots in retaliation. Hydra's focus faltered when Cancer unexpectedly protected the Autobot Minerva from Buster, allowing Ginrai to gain the advantage. They later attempted to destroy Ginrai's new trailer at Mount Yatsugatake but were driven back. Seeking a deeper revenge, Hydra and Buster lured Ginrai into a city, loudly blaming him for starting the conflict to sway public opinion against the Autobots, and summoned the Lobclaw Seacons. Autobot reinforcements and Ginrai's powerful Chōkon Power blast thwarted their plan.

When Ginrai used television to find Godmasters, Hydra and Buster tried intimidating a TV producer for viewer information. Failing, they deployed Pretenders to search the continent, inadvertently leading to the Autobot recruitment of Lightfoot. They next targeted potential Godmaster Ranger in the Rocky Mountains. During the battle, their reckless actions endangered Decepticon Headmaster Junior Wilder, causing the other Headmaster Juniors to abandon them and forcing a retreat.

Hydra employed his acting skills against the Autobot Godmasters. He disguised himself and Buster as reporters to kidnap Lightfoot's father, Leftfoot. Threatening Lightfoot, Hydra demanded he join the Decepticons or have his Master-Braces (and hands) severed. Timely intervention by other Autobot Godmasters thwarted the plan, inflicting a severe defeat where Buster's arm was torn off. Hydra called a retreat but spitefully destroyed factory buildings during withdrawal. Later, posing as movie producer "Billy Hyler," Hydra tricked Ginrai into stunt driving in the desert. Buster planted explosives to separate Ginrai from his trailer, and the brothers merged into Darkwings to destroy it. Ginrai merged with his trailer and repelled them using his Special Fire Guts attack.

Hydra and Buster participated in multiple attempts to destroy the Autobots' Godbomber drone. During a diversionary attack on a Middle-Eastern oil refinery, Giga questioned their willingness for the ultimate sacrifice. Though cold and cruel, Hydra was visibly shaken and later confided in Buster that while unafraid of dying in battle, he refused to sacrifice himself solely for victory. Another attempt involved targeting the unprotected Godbomber after separating it from Ginrai. The Autobot Headmaster Juniors, aided by Sixknight, discovered they could pilot Godbomber and defeated the Darkwings Brothers.

When Clouder sought to join the Decepticons, Hydra tested him by commanding King Poseidon to attack. After Clouder passed and infiltrated the Autobots as a spy, Hydra and Buster attacked a city to distract Ginrai and the Godmasters while the main Decepticon force assaulted the Autobot headquarters. Though defeated in their diversion, the larger plan succeeded in destroying the base. Hydra later traveled into space aboard BlackZarak as the villain prepared to unleash the Death-Para Machine on Earth, subsequently battling Lightfoot in northern Europe.

After Clouder, left for dead in the base explosion, defected to the Autobots and offered to lead Shūta Gō to a Decepticon base, Hydra overheard and radioed ahead, enabling the Decepticons to set a trap. Hydra consistently displayed ruthlessness, viewing humanity as inferior and staunchly believing in Decepticon supremacy. His fierce loyalty to Buster was evident, particularly in his horror at Buster's injury and his prioritization of his brother's safety. However, he maintained a pragmatic self-preservation instinct, explicitly refusing to sacrifice himself merely for victory despite his commitment to the Decepticon cause.
