Description
Motoki Yaze is a high school student at Saikai Academy and a classmate of Kojou Akatsuki and Asagi Aiba, the latter of whom is his childhood friend. Tall and slender, he has swept-back brown hair and teal eyes. He is almost always seen in his Saikai Academy uniform with a pair of headphones resting around his neck.
A good friend who pays sharp attention to details, his tendency to meddle leads him to plot unusual schemes, such as manipulating Kojou and Asagi into being partners during a school ball game competition. These actions stem not from ill will but from a desire to interfere in his friends' lives.
His background identifies him as a member of the Lion King Organization's Far East District, where his primary role is to serve as the official observer of the Fourth Primogenitor, Kojou Akatsuki. A descendant of the Yaze Clan, known for producing Hyper Adapters, he was deemed a lackluster specimen in infancy, his future role confined to observation. During childhood, he was employed to monitor criminal-politicians and corporations engaged in illegal activities. Just before starting middle school, Kazuma briefed him on Kojou, and he was subsequently assigned to watch over him.
A significant event occurs when he is caught in the crossfire of a Tartarus Lapse attack aimed at Asagi. The magical damage and severe blood loss plunge him into a temporary coma. After a week in the hospital, he recovers but is left with critical internal organ damage from overusing his Hyper Adaptation power and an overdose of boosters. This injury prevents him from monitoring Kojou or using his abilities in combat for a time. It also severs his ability to contact Koyomi Shizuka, one of the Lion King Agency's Three Saints, whom he calls his girlfriend. He is transferred to a high-tech hospital in Island North's research district, attached to a pharmaceutical company, where his electronic devices are confiscated, cutting him off from informing others of his move. In a separate incident, Nagisa Akatsuki tends to a wound on his torso after he hesitantly removes his bloody shirt.
His primary abilities are psychic powers inherited from his descent from the Devas, specializing in the manipulation of air currents and sound waves. His specific power, Soundscape, enhances his hearing far beyond human limits to eavesdrop or spy across a radius of several kilometers. A weakness of this ability is its vulnerability to disruptive, loud noises; a powerful burst from Kojou, for instance, can harm his hearing for several minutes. By consuming a special pill, he can use Air Propulsion to propel himself through the air for quick movement. Ingesting several pills amplifies his powers enough to create a Sound Clone, a duplicate he controls through concentration while wearing his headphones. The clone's full capabilities remain unknown, as it was destroyed immediately upon its first appearance. Utilizing these enhanced abilities requires certain drugs or enhancers.
Beyond his psychic talents, he holds the societal position of president of Japan's Yaze Consortium. Although internal divisions have weakened the consortium's power, his family retains strong influence with the Japanese government, which he leveraged to successfully lobby for the revocation of an order to destroy Itogami Island.
He is known to tell Kojou, "Sorry, I’m leavin’ the rest to you… Don’t make my childhood friend cry, Kojou…" A piece of trivia notes that although his dancing was surprisingly good, Asagi found it gross how well he copied the dancing of the Oceanus Girls.
