Description
Chevelle Kayama, also known as Schubel Quill in English versions, is a character from the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens who serves as a prominent antagonist during the Goha 6th Elementary arc. He holds the position of Tactical Advisor within the Goha 6th Elementary Heavy Cavalry Duel Club, a role he shares with his inseparable pet pigeon, Pidgetrap Quill. His backstory reveals a softer origin; he was raised by Pidgetrap and the pigeon's family, helping with a delivery service called CooQuill Express. During a snowy delivery, both he and Pidgetrap became trapped in a blizzard and were rescued by the great-grandfather of Asana Mutsuba, the club's leader, which led to their eventual recruitment into the Heavy Cavalry Duel Club.
In terms of appearance, Chevelle is a slim young boy with curly dark purple hair and distinct golden eyes. His attire is typically smart and features a light yellow jacket with a white collar, a dark green bowtie, white pants held by a black or brown belt, white gloves, and black boots. He completes his outfit with a red cape draped over his right shoulder, while his left shoulder is fitted with a brown pad that serves as a perch for his partner pigeon, Pidgetrap.
Chevelle possesses a personality that blends arrogance and dramatic elegance with a deep respect for his close allies, including Asana and Galian Townsend. He has a pronounced love for trickery, often acting as a prankster during duels and introducing his trap card activations with a theatrical flourish. He communicates with a unique flair, frequently sprinkling French words like non and monsieur into his speech and habitually tacking his own name onto the end of his sentences. When interpreting the coos of Pidgetrap for others, he replaces his name with a pigeon-like coo. His behavior is deeply influenced by his bond with Pidgetrap; although they are close, they are not above bickering, and he shows a caring, protective nature towards the pigeon, once saving it from a fatal fall immediately after an argument. A flashback reveals a more timid younger self, whom Pidgetrap once called Crybaby Schubel-chan, indicating a significant growth in confidence over time.
Motivationally, Chevelle is driven by loyalty to his club and his partner. Initially acting as an antagonist, his primary goals are to support the Heavy Cavalry Duel Club and Asana Mutsuba, as well as to protect and duel alongside Pidgetrap. In the story, he plays a key role in the Goha 6th Elementary arc, where he and the club oppose the protagonists' Rush Duels. He is present when the club raids the old school building hosting a Dark Rush Duel tournament and later takes on Luke in a dueling challenge. His role evolves from that of a direct adversary to a more collaborative ally after the club accepts modification. During a crucial duel against Luke, a conflict arises when he attempts to take control of the match away from Pidgetrap, leading to a moment of infighting. His defeat and subsequent reconciliation with his pigeon partner mark a key moment of development for him.
Chevelle's key relationships are central to his character. His most significant bond is with his partner pigeon, Pidgetrap Quill, who he claims gives him real-time instructions during duels, with Chevelle acting as his translator. He is a loyal subordinate to Asana Mutsuba, the club's president, and works alongside his peer, Galian Townsend. He also serves as a rival to Luke, against whom he has a notable defeat.
Regarding his abilities, Chevelle is not a solo duelist. He owns a Winged Beast Deck that is heavily reliant on Trap Cards. His dueling strategy is unique as he claims to not develop his own plans but rather executes moves he interprets directly from Pidgetrap. Notable monsters in his arsenal include Bombird, Tyhone, and Phantom Dove Night Vision, while his trap and spell lineup features cards like Heart Foolery, Counter Bomb, and Shot through the Heart. His most famous recorded duel is a loss against Tatsuhisa Kamijo, also known as Luke, which takes place in episode 37 of the series.
