Description
Galient Tazaki, known as Galian Townsend in some versions, is an antagonist introduced during the Goha 6 Elementary arc of the anime. He serves as the tactical advisor for the Goha 6 Elementary Heavy Cavalry Duel Club, an organization led by Asana Mutsuba. His educational background includes attendance at Goha 6 Elementary, and in the events following the series finale, he is shown as a student at Goha 8 Middle School.

Despite being an elementary school student, Galient is characterized by his intense desire to appear much older and more veteran than he is. This is most visibly demonstrated by his unique grooming style; he stretches and styles his long sideburns to such an extent that they resemble a large mustache and shaped beard, a deliberate choice made specifically so he does not look his age. This desire to be seen as a seasoned authority figure extends to his speech patterns, as he frequently refers to other students as younguns and adopts the mannerisms of a grizzled old soldier. Due to this unusual combination of a child's age and an adult's appearance, he is often mistaken for a faculty member by other characters.

Galients personality is built upon a foundation of staunch traditionalism and unwavering loyalty to Asana Mutsuba. As a traditionalist, he initially views Rush Dueling as a blasphemous deviation from the history of dueling and is determined to help Asana crush it entirely. His loyalty to Asana is absolute; he has helped raise her from a young age and insists that others, like Yuga Ohdo, use respectful honorifics when addressing her, calling her the great one. He is deeply attached to his personal heavy cavalry unit, a blue excavator named GG03, which he operates with great pride. However, his personality also contains a duplicitous streak. He has shown a willingness to trap opponents, such as when he left Yuga and his friends stranded at a training camp by digging a ravine around their cabin, and has lied outright about his actions, such as hiding the fact he forced students to join the Heavy Cavalry Duel Club after defeating them in a Duel. Despite these manipulative tactics, he is not without honor, as he shows deep regret for abandoning Yuga in a team competition and intended to uphold a promise to allow Gavin Sogetsu to leave Goha 6 Elementary if he won their Duel.

Galients role in the story is primarily as an obstacle for the protagonists. He is first seen sabotaging the Rush Duel training camp, using his heavy machinery to isolate Yuga and his friends from the outside world. He engages in several Duels to recruit talented students to the Heavy Cavalry Duel Club for Asanas cause, including a notable victory against Ranze Nanahoshi. His most significant relationships are with his fellow club members, including Schubel Quill, Pidgetrap Quill, and Caterpillio Elephantis, with whom he forms a unit called The Heavy Cavalry Rangers. However, his most important relationship is with Asana Mutsuba, whom he serves with complete devotion.

Across the series, Galient undergoes a notable development, particularly centered on his relationship with tradition and his role as a duelist. After losing a Rush Duel to Gavin Sogetsu, his heavy cavalry unit GG03 was destroyed, leaving him despondent. This defeat forced him to leave his position at Goha 6 Elementary and start anew at the Abandoned Dorm, where he performed manual labor with a shovel, a state Ranze referred to as GG03 deficiency due to his separation from his machine. This period of humility, combined with witnessing Yuga demonstrate that even Asanas own R0 machine was modified during its creation, helped him move past his rigid traditionalism and accept the notion of modification and change. Even so, his core desire to serve Asana never wavers, and he eventually returns to her service once his beloved GG03 is repaired.

In terms of dueling abilities, Galient is a formidable opponent who uses an EARTH Machine Type deck. His strategy often focuses on Tribute Summoning powerful monsters. His signature card is Drilling Mandrill, which he typically summons by Tributing monsters like Shovel Crusher or Bull Breaker. The effect of Drilling Mandrill allows him to force the opponent's face-down Defense Position monsters into Attack Position while reducing their original Attack Points to zero, creating a clear path for a devastating attack. He also utilizes trap cards like Darkness Approaches, which allows him to send cards from his hand to the Graveyard to change a face-up monster to face-down Defense Position, and Mequestrian Tactics, which lets him revive an EARTH Machine monster from the Graveyard. His skills as a duelist are matched by his physical strength, as demonstrated by his muscular build, which he reveals after losing his position and stripping off his uniform.
