Description
Tamamo no Mae, a nine-tailed fox spirit from Chinese and Japanese mythology, traverses history through cycles of reincarnation, adopting identities to corrupt rulers and ignite chaos. Emerging in China as Daji, she ensnared King Zhou of Shang, orchestrating the dynasty’s collapse through decadence and cruelty. Fleeing to India, she became Lady Kayō, twisting King Kalmashapada into tyranny, then resurfaced in China once more as Bao Si, undermining King You of Zhou’s reign.

In Japan’s Heian period, she reincarnated as Mikuzume, a foundling raised by humans. Maturing into a peerless scholar and beauty, she infiltrated Emperor Toba’s court under the name Tamamo-no-Mae. When the emperor fell gravely ill, the onmyōji Abe no Yasuchika unmasked her as the curse’s origin. Hunted by warriors Kazusanosuke and Miuranosuke, she met her end after a relentless pursuit.

Her corpse petrified into the Sesshō-seki, a venomous stone annihilating all life it touched, until the monk Gennō Shinshō shattered it centuries later, quelling her wrath. In 2022, the stone split open independently, spurring rumors of her resurgent influence—a phenomenon separate from her anime depiction.

The lost-media anime *Kyūbi no Kitsune to Tobimaru* reimagines her myth, depicting her seduction of Emperor Tobimaru to plunge his realm into ruin. His eventual confrontation with her secures his kingdom’s survival, mirroring her mythic role as an agent of upheaval.

Across incarnations, she embodies deceit, ambition, and the peril of unrestrained power, her manipulations echoing through conflicts like the Genpei War, cementing her legacy as a shapeshifting force of historical discord.
