Description
Daisuke Hiyama is a secondary antagonist in the story. He is originally from Japan and is a classmate of the protagonist, Hajime Nagumo, before both are transported to the fantasy world of Tortus.
Physically, Daisuke has a somewhat average build and is among the taller students in his class. He has short, light brown hair and sharp eyes that give him a delinquent appearance, a look often accentuated by a perpetual frown or a sneer.
Personality-wise, Daisuke is defined by his cowardice, arrogance, and obsessive nature. He is a classic bully who enjoys dominating those he perceives as weaker than himself, such as Hajime, but is servile and obsequious towards anyone he believes is stronger. He is driven by a deep-seated jealousy and a twisted, obsessive affection for their classmate, Kaori Shirasaki. Daisuke's hatred for Hajime stems from his belief that Hajime is an unworthy otaku who does not deserve the positive attention Kaori gives him. While he considers himself strong and popular, he is in fact selfish, ruthless, and lacks genuine empathy for others, using his three followers, whom Hajime nicknames the Bastard Four, as tools to further his own petty vendetta rather than as true friends. He is also prone to impulsive, short-sighted actions and has a habit of blaming others or running away when his schemes fail.
Daisuke's primary motivation throughout the story is his selfish and unrequited love for Kaori Shirasaki. He believes that removing Hajime from the picture will allow him to win her affection. His actions are almost exclusively aimed at achieving this goal, showing little to no concern for the fate of the new world, his other classmates, or any sense of duty as a summoned hero.
In the story, Daisuke's role is that of an instigator and a primary source of conflict among the summoned classmates. Before being transported, he and his gang routinely harass and physically beat Hajime at school. After arriving in Tortus, this bullying continues under the guise of combat training, as Daisuke is delighted to learn his own job is the combat-oriented Light Warrior, while Hajime is given the non-combat Synergist class. The pivotal event of his role occurs during a class expedition into the Great Orcus Labyrinth. Seizing a moment of chaos during a monster attack, Daisuke uses his fire magic to blast Hajime, causing him to fall into a deep abyss, seemingly to his death. After this act, he is discovered and blackmailed by another classmate, Eri Nakamura, becoming her reluctant accomplice in her own treacherous schemes.
Daisuke's key relationships are defined by his obsessions and rivalries. He holds an intense, hateful jealousy toward Hajime Nagumo, who is both the victim of his bullying and his rival for Kaori's attention. His relationship with Kaori is not one of genuine love but of unhealthy obsession, viewing her as a possession to be won. He acts as the leader for Shinji Nakano, Yoshiki Saitou, and Reichi Kondou, using their collective dislike of Hajime to form his bullying squad. Later, he becomes a manipulated pawn of Eri Nakamura, who uses his guilt and desires to force him into becoming a traitor and a murderer.
Daisuke undergoes a clear development from a petty schoolyard bully to a genuine criminal. Initially, despite his cruelty, he retains some hesitation about committing outright murder, a remnant of his ordinary background. However, his jealousy pushes him to attempt to kill Hajime by pushing him into the abyss. After being blackmailed by Eri, he descends further, losing all moral compunction as he collaborates in her plans to betray the kingdom of Heiligh. His final act of treachery is stabbing Kaori in the back under the pretense of being wounded, hoping to have her transformed into an undead puppet. This leads to his final confrontation with a much more powerful Hajime, who brutally defeats him and leaves him to be devoured by monsters, ending his life in terror.
In terms of notable abilities, Daisuke's job as a Light Warrior grants him basic combat skills and physical enhancements superior to an average person in Tortus. He is shown to be capable of using rudimentary fire magic. However, despite the initial advantage of his class and the general blessing given to all summoned heroes, Daisuke is considered weak and unremarkable. His arrogance and cowardice lead him to neglect training, causing him to be quickly outclassed by most of his peers. He lacks any unique or powerful abilities, relying instead on subterfuge, luck, and the aid of stronger allies to accomplish his goals.
