Description
Kozue Ayuhara, known as Nelly in some European adaptations, transfers to Fujimi Academy from a Tokyo school with a strong volleyball team, forced to quit sports due to health reasons. At Fujimi, she discovers a passion for volleyball and befriends a group of students labeled delinquents. Kozue forms her own volleyball team with them, challenging and narrowly defeating the school's official team. This victory leads to the integration of several delinquent members into the volleyball club, with Kozue rising to become captain.

She possesses extraordinary volleyball talent, excelling as an ace attacker and earning the junior high nickname "Attack No. 1." Her skills impress coach Shunsuke Hongō, who implements rigorous training. Kozue's rapid ascent creates friction, particularly with established star player Yumi Katsuragi. Her driving ambition is to join the Japanese national team and compete internationally.

Progressing from school district leagues to national finals and international championships, Kozue confronts escalating challenges. Her journey forces her to navigate the negative aspects of success, including intense external pressure, self-conceit, and rivalry-fueled envy. Significant relationships develop, notably her friendship with Midori Hayakawa, who evolves from a rival demanding captaincy to Kozue's closest teammate. Other key teammates include former delinquent Keiko "Kakko" Kashiwagi, high school team captain Miyuki Ōnuma, and former tennis player Kyouko Makimura.

Kozue faces formidable rivals who test her resilience and force her to adapt her playing style. These include Michiru Sanjō (a member of Japan's "Best Twelve" with a traumatic past), Yoshiko Kakinouchi, Soviet player Shellenina, the Yagisawa sisters (known for a three-person attack technique), and American junior players Cathy and Virginia.

After junior high, Kozue continues her career at Fujimi High School. She encounters new hurdles integrating into the high school team under Captain Miyuki Ōnuma's initially selfish leadership. Kozue persists, earns respect, and becomes a regular player. Her leadership matures as she navigates team dynamics, mentoring newcomers like Kyouko Makimura.

The sequel manga "Shin Attack No. 1" (1975) and its 2004–2005 redraw by Kanon Ozawa continue Kozue's story beyond high school. A 2005 live-action drama adaptation features the character, portrayed by Aya Ueto. Kozue's character arc centers on perseverance through adversity, balancing personal ambition with team cohesion, and confronting the psychological pressures of competitive sports. Her growth is marked by transitions from an enthusiastic newcomer to a disciplined leader facing athletic and interpersonal challenges.
