Description
Kanon Shibuya is the central protagonist of Love Live! Superstar!! and the leader of the school idol group Liella!. A first-year student at Yuigaoka Girls' High School at the start of the story, she eventually becomes a third-year and serves as the group's leader throughout her time there. Her image color is marigold, a warm shade of orange.

Kanon comes from a family that runs a cozy cafe, where she often helps her mother serve signature dishes like baked apples with cream. Her father works as a translator, and her grandmother, who is from Spain, is known for making delicious homemade paella, one of Kanon's favorite foods. Living at the cafe, Kanon has many fond memories of her childhood there, most of which include her longtime friend and neighbor, Chisato Arashi. Another member of her household is her pet owl, Manmaru, whose name means "round" and who serves as the cafe's beloved mascot.

In terms of personality, Kanon is distinct from the typically energetic and forward protagonists of previous Love Live! series. She is characterized as being somewhat shy, flustered, and lacking confidence in her own abilities, often describing herself as a very ordinary person with no particular talents. This insecurity is rooted in a childhood trauma where she froze and was unable to sing during a school performance, an event that left her with severe stage fright and prevented her from pursuing her dream of entering the music program at Yuigaoka. Despite this anxiety, singing is her most cherished pastime, and she often finds herself unconsciously humming along to music on her headphones as she walks through town. Her central desire and motivation is to use her voice to bring happiness and energy to others, a wish that ultimately drives her to accept Keke Tang's invitation to become a school idol and break free from her self-perception of being "normal".

While she is initially more reserved than other series leads, Kanon possesses a natural, unassuming charisma and a magnetic personality that draws people to her. She is exceptionally kind-hearted, selfless, and a loyal friend, willing to stand up for others, a trait she displayed even in childhood when she would protect Chisato from bullies. This extends to her interactions with potential new members; she is patient and empathetic, able to see the good in people even when they are hostile or standoffish, as shown in her efforts to befriend Wien Margarete. She can also display a more boyish, blunt, and surprisingly assertive side, especially when frustrated or when defending her friends or the school idol club. Her personal motto, "It's always sunny above the clouds," reflects her underlying optimism and determination to look beyond immediate difficulties.

Kanon's role in the story is that of Liella!'s founding member and its steady, guiding heart. Unlike previous protagonists who initiated the formation of their idol groups, Kanon is initially reluctant and must be convinced by Keke to start the club. Throughout the series, her primary role evolves from overcoming her own fears to actively recruiting and supporting new members. She becomes the emotional core of the group, using her own experiences with failure and self-doubt to understand and encourage others who are struggling, such as Sumire Heanna and Kinako Sakurakoji. In her second year, she also takes on the official role of student council vice president.

Key relationships define much of her development. Her partnership with Keke Tang is foundational, as Keke's unwavering belief in Kanon's voice gives her the courage to take her first steps as a school idol. Her bond with her childhood friend, Chisato Arashi, is equally significant; Chisato understands Kanon's struggles deeply and has always been a source of quiet support, with the two sharing a promise to become better people who can help each other. These close ties, along with her relationships with all other members of Liella!, are central to her journey and the group's unity.

Kanon's development is the primary focus of the first season, which chronicles her transformation from a shy, insecure girl who cannot sing in public to a confident leader capable of performing on stage and rallying others. Her arc is praised for its realistic portrayal of anxiety, as she does not simply get over her fears overnight but learns to manage them, finding the strength to sing for the sake of her friends and her own dream. This growth allows her to mature into a figure who not only chases her own aspirations but also becomes a pillar of support for the entire group.

Regarding her abilities, Kanon's greatest talent is her beautiful and compelling singing voice, which is noted as being her most cherished gift. In addition to singing, she has shown skill in playing the guitar and composing music, often writing lyrics and melodies for the group's songs. Her creative process sometimes involves doing a specific yoga pose she calls her "concentrating pose" when she needs inspiration. Physically, she has a slim figure with orange hair that reaches her shoulders and purple eyes. At home, she is often seen with her hair tied up and wearing glasses.
