Description
Mao Hiiragi is a supporting character in the anime Love Live! Superstar!!. She comes from Kōzu-shima, a small island with which she maintains a deep and affectionate connection, thinking of her hometown as one big family. Alongside Yuna Hijirisawa, she co-founded the school idol group Sunny Passion, and the duo quickly became a powerful and well-known presence in the school idol world, even reaching the finals of the Love Live competition. Mao is a second-year student when first introduced, later advancing to third year and eventually graduating by the end of the second season.
Mao is outwardly calm, observant, and reserved, speaking less than her energetic partner Yuna. Despite her composed and cool demeanor, which has earned her the nickname Sexy Night of Sunny Passion due to her beauty and mature poise, she harbors a more emotional side. Yuna notes that Mao becomes very emotional when watching movies, a vulnerability that her partner finds endearing. Despite the rivalry, Mao is kind, friendly, and supportive toward Liella! members. She says she was initially drawn to them because they shone so brightly, and she saw them as people who could bring out the best in each other. Even after Sunny Passion is eliminated from the Love Live remote judging by Wien Margarete in the second season, Mao courageously gives advice to Liella! and later attends the national stadium to cheer for them. This supportive role continues throughout the series, showing her maturity and generosity.
