Description
Kou Yoku is a military commander of the southern superstate Chu, known by the epithet Thunder. He began his rise as the leader of an elite 1000-man unit attached to the army of General Rin Bu Kun and later commanded the Kou Yoku Army, a force of 30,000 soldiers under his direct authority. He belongs to Chu’s emerging generation of young commanders and is roughly the same age as the Qin prodigies Ri Shin, Ou Hon, and Mou Ten.
His personality is loud, rude in casual settings, yet oddly laid-back until combat begins, at which point he becomes intensely aggressive and almost recklessly eager. Arrogance is a defining trait, mirroring the approach of many famed Chu warriors, and he carries himself with the swagger of a man convinced of his own strength. While he often disfavors intricate strategy—preferring raw martial power—he is pragmatic enough to recognize genius when it comes from his superior, Great General and Prime Minister Ka Rin, whose promotions of him he appreciates even while grumbling about her tactical methods.
Kou Yoku is driven by a fierce desire to prove his worth as the foremost young warrior of Chu and to eclipse his Qin rivals. His motivation is rooted in the pride of his home state and a personal ambition to become a great general whose name echoes across the warring kingdoms. That ambition places him in frequent direct confrontation with Ri Shin, Ou Hon, and Mou Ten, whom he regards as benchmarks for his own growth. Their clashes have spanned multiple campaigns, most notably during the Coalition Invasion, where he showed he could match Shin blow for blow. In battle, his relationship with Ka Rin is one of a promising subordinate who chafes at her indirect warfare but depends on her political and logistical support; his original commander, Rin Bu Kun, left an imprint of valorous leadership that Kou Yoku emulates.
Over the course of the story he evolves from a brash unit commander into a general wielding a substantial army, learning to temper his impulsiveness just enough to handle larger responsibilities without losing his frontline ferocity. His defining ability is exceptional martial prowess: he is a whirlwind of speed and power, capable of dueling the strongest fighters Qin can field. His moniker Thunder reflects the explosive, high-impact nature of his charges. The soldiers he commands are seasoned and tightly loyal, giving his army a disciplined edge that complements his straightforward, hammering style of warfare.
