Description
Bunta Fujiwara is the owner of a tofu shop in Gunma Prefecture and the father of the series' protagonist, Takumi Fujiwara. Years before the events of the story, Bunta was a legendary street racer known as the White Ghost of Akina, a reputation he earned for his unmatched downhill speed on Mount Akina behind the wheel of his Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86, where he set the mountain's fastest recorded time. He is widely considered to have been undefeated during his racing career, with a notable rivalry against Ken Kogashiwa on the Irohazaka road that culminated in Bunta's victory in their decisive race.

After retiring from active racing, Bunta dedicated himself to running his tofu business and, more importantly, to training his son in an unconventional and indirect manner. Beginning when Takumi was just thirteen years old, Bunta assigned him the daily pre-dawn task of making tofu deliveries in the AE86. To ensure the tofu remained intact, Bunta placed a cup of water in the car's holder and demanded that not a single drop be spilled, a method that forced Takumi to develop extraordinarily smooth and precise car control without any formal instruction. This training regimen, while effective in building Takumi's talent, was also a reflection of Bunta's personal teaching philosophy, which valued practical experience over verbal advice. Despite his seeming detachment, Bunta closely follows his son's development, providing the necessary tools and challenges at each stage of Takumi's growth as a driver.

In the film New Initial D the Movie: Legend 3: Dream, Bunta's role as the guiding force behind Takumi's racing career continues to be central. As Takumi prepares for his climactic race against the skilled Ryosuke Takahashi, Bunta takes the AE86 and modifies its suspension settings. He personally tests these adjustments on Mount Akina, demonstrating his extraordinary driving skill during this test drive. In a moment that encapsulates his casual mastery behind the wheel, he performs a high-speed drift while simultaneously taking his hands off the steering wheel to light a cigarette, showing no concern for the danger that his passenger witnesses. Beyond the mechanical preparation, Bunta's guidance is philosophical; he advises that Takumi's victory will depend on overcoming his own limits and inner struggles rather than simply trying to out-drive his opponent.

Bunta's personality is typically aloof and detached, with a demeanor that often makes him seem disinterested or unconcerned. He is a heavy smoker, frequently depicted with a cigarette, a habit that contributes to his aged and weathered appearance. He has a deep distaste for the very tofu he sells for a living and prefers the sound of a carburetor engine and tobacco. He dislikes large cars and is known for having a special skill of dozing off even while drifting, a sign of his profound experience and perhaps a deep-seated boredom with driving that is no longer a challenge. His personal history includes stepping away from professional racing to raise his family, and it is suggested he may have experienced difficult periods in his youth that have affected his relationships. He lives alone with Takumi, and the absence of Takumi's mother is a subject that is never directly addressed in the primary narrative.

Bunta's key relationships are few but significant. His primary connection is with his son, Takumi, though it is expressed through actions and automotive challenges rather than words. He maintains a friendship with Yuichi Tachibana, the owner of the gas station where Takumi works, who often assists in testing Bunta's tuning adjustments before major races. Bunta also retains connections within the professional racing world, which he uses to secure rare and high-performance parts, such as the circuit-tuned 4A-GE 20-valve engine he installs in the AE86 after its original motor fails. His own driving abilities remain god-like throughout the series. He is not only a master of the AE86 but also a highly skilled driver of modern all-wheel-drive vehicles, as demonstrated when he acquires a Subaru Impreza WRX STI Type R Version V. After purchasing this car, he secretly defeated Takumi in a downhill run to demonstrate the capabilities of a four-wheel-drive car, deliberately inducing a psychological complex in his son to broaden his driving perspective. He then mandated that Takumi alternate between the AE86 and the Impreza for his deliveries, a final step in his son's training to expose him to different vehicle dynamics and ensure his continued growth as a well-rounded driver.
